Dina arbetsuppgifterType of employment: Fixed-term employment, 4 years Extent: 100 % Location: Sahlgrenska Academy, Gothenburg First day of employment: As agreed Reference number: UR 2015/901 Project title: Breast cancer stem cell plasticity and relations to the tumour microenvironment Job assignments: This PhD-project will focus on the clinically problematic subset of cancer stem cells and delineate how key mediators in the tumour microenvironment can influence the malignant properties with a focus on single-cell based assays. Specifically, we will characterize how hypoxia via secretion can affect the fraction of cancer stem cells as well as characterize and modulate how the scaffolds enclosing the tumour cells interact with tumour properties. Breast cancer is the most common cancer form in women and is unfortunately often associated with a complex and long disease and treatment period. In addition, there is a substantial risk that the cancer will spread and cause metastatic disease. A major drawback with the existing therapies is that they do not target the breast cancer stem cell niche which is subpopulations of cancer cells that inhabit and direct the malignant properties. Tumour cells are further affected by the context in which they are situated and the microenvironment has been shown to influence tumour progression as well as therapy efficiency. This project is translational in its nature and will be performed in close association with different national and international academic collaborators. The project will combine experimental work (molecular biology/cell biology) with data analysis (bioinformatics). Novel analytical techniques will be applied and combined with functional cancer stem cell models using both primary breast cancer cells from surgery as well as cell line systems. A successful student is expected to achieve top-expertise in the research field of single-cell tumor biology as well as translational science. We are looking for a highly motivated person to join our research team that enjoys working in team and taking responsibilities. More details about our research can be found at:
http://www.cancercenter.gu.se (Göran Landberg and Anders Ståhlberg). The project will be performed at Sahlgrenska Cancer Center. The center is a joint effort between the Sahlgrenska Academy at University of Gothenburg and the Sahlgrenska University Hospital. The long-term goal of the center is to improve the care of cancer patients by facilitating new scientific discoveries and translating these into clinical practice. Sahlgrenska Cancer Center offers a highly dynamic and intellectual stimulating environment. We would like the applicants to motivate why they interested in the project and why they are suitable applicants. The PhD position comprises 4 years full-time studies and leads to a doctoral degree. The position is funded via doctoral studentship.
