Food and environmental microbes in the farming environment - what mediates protection from allergy?
It is known that the farming environment affords protection from allergy development; several studies have provided evidence for a very low incidence of allergy among children raised on small family farms. The mechanism for this protection is unknown but may relate to exposure to protective microbes or a different diet in the traditional farm families. Of particular interest are fish and unprocessed milk. Epidemiological data indicate that early introduction of fish protect against atopic eczema, while the opposite is the case for commercial milk.
Job description
The PhD project will focus on analysis of fatty acids composition, and antioxidants in the farm diets and breast milk from a cohort of children followed from 0 - 18 months. Effects of selected diet components (e.g. fish long chain omega 3 fatty acids, unprocessed and processed milk) on allergic inflammation and ability to develop tolerance against harmless substances in the environment will be studied in animal models. The project will be performed in collaboration with Sahlgrenska Academy.
The project is part of the multidisciplinary graduate school Environment and Health co-ordinate by Centre for Environment and Sustainability at University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology.
The position is limited to maximum 4.5 years and corresponds to full-time research during four years. In addition, duties at the department, mainly teaching in the undergraduate and master courses at Chalmers, corresponding to 0.5 years distributed over the whole time of the position is included.
