As Ph.D. Student at Environmental attribute and material management you will explore the field of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The Ph.D. project "LCA - as a tool for developing future more energy-efficient vehicles", focuses on the environmental impact and resources scarcity caused by producing a car and its numerous parts. This will be one of the key positions in making the transformation to cars with less environmental impact possible. The competence developed within this project will be of great value to Volvo Cars and an important building block for the future.
The position is an industrial PhD position at Volvo Cars at the Environmental Attribute and Material Management group. The group has the overall responsibility for the environment attribute area within Research & Development. Within the responsibilities of the group are development of next generation environmental strategy, ensuring legal compliance and assessing environmental impact and setting requirements cross programs and advanced engineering projects. This word is "omtanke" and summarizes our way of protecting what's important to you. At Environmental Attribute and Material Management group we are expanding our work in life cycle thinking.
The division Environmental System Analysis, at the department of Technology Management and Economics at Chalmers University of Technology is the academic partner of the project, where research and teaching cover different types of environmental assessments of technology, environmental management and environmentally driven innovation systems. Currently, there are approximately 35 staff members, with varying disciplinary backgrounds.
Key research questions that are to be explored in the project include: Which components and subsystems are most important for the total environmental burden of the vehicle? How can different data sources be used to provide the required environmental information? How should product specifications be formulated to minimize the vehicle's environmental impact while fitting into current processes and nomenclature at Volvo Cars? What are the most important resource challenges for future vehicle how will these challenges shape vehicle development in the long term?
Main responsibilities
* Modelling and analyzing of LCA on vehicles
* Analyzing available data for LCA
* Investigating how LCA studies can be used for setting requirements in product development
* Building and communicating knowledge on resource constrains and future trajectories in the automotive industry
Required qualifications
* The general admission requirements for PhD programs (third cycle) are a Master's level degree (second cycle) in engineering or similar corresponding to at least 240 higher (ECTS) education credits.?
* Master's level courses in LCA, industrial ecology or similar.?
* Fluent in English, both verbally and in writing
Meritorious qualifications
* At least one year work experience after finished thesis work
* Work with LCA and environmental impacts
* Experience from requirement development
* Experience from automotive development
