Skilled and committed employees are a crucial factor in the success of Linköping University. And we need more of them. Our core expertise comes from teachers and researchers, but a successful university requires experienced and motivated employees in many fields. Everyone is important. We need to recruit many new employees thanks to, among all, an expansion in our research activity. We need you here. We look forward to receiving your application!

The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology conducts research and offers education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Research, the predominant activity, is often done in collaboration with corporate and international partners. We are one of the university's largest, oldest and most well known departments, encompassing five interacting scientific fields: biology, chemistry, material physics, applied physics and theory and modelling.

LINKÖPING UNIVERSITY
Hereby advertises a position as

PhD student (licentiate) in theoretical and computational physics
formally based at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (IFM).

Duties
We perform research in theoretical and computational physics in the areas of materials design and informatics. Our research is aimed at increased understanding of the theory of materials and has applications in the development of new materials, for example, for energy harvesting, conversion, and storage. The work spans areas of mathematical physics, quantum mechanics, numerical methods, programming, and the use of informatics and AI methods in materials research.
Ongoing research projects include the development of theoretical methods for the computational prediction of materials properties, execution of high-throughout calculations on supercomputers aimed at design of new materials, development of software for automated computation, analysis, and data curation in large scale databases, and the use of informatics and machine learning/AI-based methods on materials data.

The work as a PhD student includes independent work and close collaboration with other researchers and students at the department. You will take part in our joint seminars and other research group activities.

As a PhD student you will primarily devote yourself to your research. As a PhD student you are limited to work with education and administration up to 20 percent of full time.

Qualifications
Applicants should have a relatively recent civil engineering degree, or corresponding degree on the advanced level with completed courses corresponding to, at least, 240 ECTS of which at least 60 ECTS are on advanced level, or equivalent. The degree should be in physics with a specialization of courses in theoretical physics and/or materials physics with good grades. A transcript showing courses and grades should be included with the application.

The position is not meant for those with substantially more experience, e.g., by already having a doctoral degree. Courses, diploma works, projects, and other documented experience that is shown in the application in the areas of computational and theoretical work in physics, machine learning, and work with mathematical derivation and physics models is strongly meriting. Knowledge in thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, phase diagrams, crystallography, and group theory is also meriting.

Experience of programming in the programming language Python is a requirement, and programming in other languages is meriting. The application should include a description of the level of programming in general, and specifically in Python, with concrete examples of software that the applicant has written or contributed to. Contributions to publicly available program code (e.g., in open source projects) are meriting, and if available, links to such contributions should be included in the application.

Qualified to PhD studentships are only those who are or have been admitted to graduate studies.

Appointment time
The appointment will be until further notice for a maximum of one year at a time. The employment may be renewed for no more than two years at a time. For an appointment that ends with a licentiate degree, the total time of appointment must not exceed the equivalent of two years ' full time research training.

Starting date
By agreement.

Salary
The salary for PhD students is based on the department's salary scale.
