hela Sverige Luleå University of Technology is in strong growth with world-leading competence in several research areas. We shape the future through innovative education and ground-breaking research results, and based on the Arctic region, we create global social benefit. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of SEK 1.9 billion per year. We currently have 1,840 employees and 17,670 students.
In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand. We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future.Do you want to contribute to a safe green transition using hydrogen? We are now looking for a PhD student who will work with research on hydrogen jet flames from accidental releases.
Subject description
Structural Engineering includes loads, design, sustainability, load carrying capacity, repair and strengthening, of buildings and civil engineering structures made of concrete, steel, wood and other materials, separately or in combination, at normal conditions, in cold climate and in fire.
Project description
The project goal for this position is to develop knowledge-based safety distances for the implementation of an efficient and safe hydrogen infrastructure, from a permit, safety and social acceptance perspective. The focus is to support streamlining the permitting process in general and specifically for safety distance determination which are considered one of the major challenges for a broad implementation of hydrogen technologies.
As a PhD student you will work in an interdisciplinary research environment, in close collaboration with research institutes and industry. The successful candidate will perform research on radiation from hydrogen jet flames, radiative heat transfer, and the radiative thermal effects on surrounding objects. You will also be part of the Centre for Hydrogen Energy Systems Sweden, CH2ESS. CH2ESS is a research and knowledge initiative at Luleå University of Technology with a focus on hydrogen use in industrial processes and energy systems, in close collaboration with Swedish industry.
Duties
As a doctoral student, you are trained in scientific work in the form of publishing scientific articles in journals and presentations at national and international conferences. You also study compulsory and optional doctoral courses. In addition, you can have the opportunity to try out the teaching role. The work as a PhD student in this project is mainly theoretical and numerical, which requires knowledge in combustion physics and radiative heat transfer. You will also participate in the Network of young scientist within Hydrogen, in the CH2ESS network.
Qualifications
Applicants with a completed MSc degree in fire engineering, combustion, physics, heat transfer, mechanical engineering or equivalent are welcome to apply. You should have very good communication skills and be fluent in spoken and written English. Experience in numerical analysis and programming, CFD (computational fluid dynamics), FEA (finite element analysis) is advantageous. During the evaluation, special emphasis is placed on:
• Knowledge relevant to the current project
• The quality of the MSc thesis
• Personal characteristics relevant to research
