The Environmental Psychology Group, University of Gävle, Sweden has a research tradition in how noise and acoustics affect attention, speech intelligibility, memory and learning, particularly in children. The group's core expertise is experimental psychology.
University of Gävle (HiG) was founded in 1977, and has 14 500 students, 50 study programmes, about 500 courses in humanities, social and natural sciences and technology. HiG focues its research in 2 profiles, namely, Built Environment and Health-promoting working life which include Sustainable built environment, Musculoskeletal disorders, and Electrical engineering as key activity areas.
The campus at Kungsbäck in Gävle offers a beautiful study and research environment with all departments gathered in one place which is only a few minutes from the city centre. HiG is located in a scenic area with Gävle River and the Boulogner Forest as its closest neighbours. The carefully re-built regiment barracks have created a gathered campus where the distance between students, teachers and researchers is close.

The position is financed by the EU (Marie Curie ITN, FP 7). The name of the program is iCare (Improving Children Auditory Rehabilitation)
www.icareitn.eu . The program includes nine full partners and seven associate partners. The overall goals of iCARE are to:
• Provide training to create a new generation of researchers capable of exploiting the synergies between different disciplines to optimize spoken communication in children with hearing impairment.
• Combine research across disciplines to develop novel methods, training skills and procedures for improving auditory rehabilitation and use the generated knowledge, products and skills to empower children and adolescents with hearing disabilities as well as their parents, care givers, educators, speech therapists, medical professionals and other involved persons.
Your responsibilities
• Conduct research in young children with and without normal hearing to establish reasonable target values for speech intelligibility and learning in classrooms
• To compare different technical and acoustic arrangements in the classroom to evaluate how much they can improve on the acoustic scenes
The doctoral student should focus primarily on the research training. However, a doctoral student may engage, to a limited extent, in teaching, other research and administration. This type of work is limited to a maximum of 20 percent of full-time.
KvalifikationerYour profile
• General qualifications for admission to doctoral education at University of Gävle are successful completion of courses consisting of 240 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 credits are in an advanced level, or the applicant may have an equivalent older degree, or the equivalent knowledge acquired in other ways.
• A specific requirement is that the applicant should have 90 ECTS in psychology, education, audiology or speech and language pathology.
• Your research experience after having obtained this degree is less than 4 full years
• A good technical competence in data analysis (SPSS) and computer science.
• A dedication for research on children, combined with a strong international ambition, shown as willingness to move to Sweden.
• Good verbal and written communication skills in English, as well as a willingness to learn/speak Swedish, which is necessary to communicate with the children.
• If you have lived, worked or studied in Sweden for more than 12 months in the last 3 years, you are not eligible for this position.
• You must be willing to spend up to 3 months in Aachen, Germany with one of our partners in the iCARE project.
