Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application!
Your work assignments
The primary focus of this PhD position will consist in generating bioengineered models of human trigeminal pain, implement them in organ-on-a-chip systems emulating trigeminal-target interactions, and optimize them towards validation as preclinical platforms alternative to animal model for drugs screening and development. The project is part of a collaborative effort and will involve close collaboration both in the team, and with academic and industry partners.
As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20 per cent of full-time.
Your qualifications
You have graduated at Master's level in Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biology, Biomedicine or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in Bioengineering. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.
You are expected to have very good communication skills in English, both spoken and written.
In order to succeed as a doctoral student, you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. Ability and willingness to work in a highly collaborative environment, which involves research exchanges, learning multiple scientific approaches, and sharing knowledge, is absolutely necessary.
Proven expertise in the following is highly meritorious:
• organ-on-a-chip development and fabrication
• culture and differentiation of human induced pluripotent stem cells
• basic knowledge of craniofacial biology
• generation of 3D models with complex defined extracellular matrices.
The candidate should submit a letter of intent, providing a narrative description of their scientific background, their expertise, the motivations behind their choice of pursuing a PhD and more generally, a career in science (not necessarily academic) at large.
Your workplace
Hosting laboratory: Bioengineering of human oral tissues and disease models, Laboratory of Molecular Materials.
Emulate & understand: two faces of one coin. In our team, we strive to understand how tissue-resident cells, extracellular matrices, innervation, vasculature and immune cells cooperate and modulate each other's responses to ensure organ-level functions and topographies. We use this information to create complex, complete 3D models of human organs and diseases. At the same time, we exploit these tools to advance our understanding of tissue development, homeostasis, and the onset of diseases. Our current focus is on the emulation of human dental tissues, human oral cancers, and the human trigeminal complex
