Hereby advertises a position as
PhD student in Applied Sensor Science
formally based at the department of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, IFM
Duties
PhD student position focusing on graphene for extremely sensitive gas sensors.
The daily work of the PhD student is primarily devoted to research related activities within the field of sensor science. More specifically, the PhD student will work with development of graphene electronic devices for sensor applications where extremely high sensitivity is required. Exploration of two-dimensional monolayer materials other than graphene is also envisioned.
The work will be performed within the context of a larger project comprising four research groups at LiU and Chalmers, aimed at exploring the potential of large scale epitaxial graphene on silicon carbide (SiC) for development of applications with new functionality. Production methods of wafer scale epitaxial graphene will be developed for applications in metrology, sensing, and electronics.
The major aim of this PhD project is to use epitaxially grown graphene on SiC for wafer scale production of extremely sensitive and reproducible low cost graphene field effect transistor (GFET) gas sensors. Graphene sensors may find applications where extremely high sensitivity is a priority. One such application is the emerging and wide field of indoor and outdoor air quality monitoring and control, where current European initiatives and future legislation will drive forward a huge market for low-power sensors operating at low temperature in indoor and outdoor applications.
More specific goals will include:
• GFET sensor development and optimization for most sensitive gas detection
• Reliable mass-production compatible device processing
• Optimization of device operating conditions
• Improvement in selectivity between different gases and speed of response/recovery by surface modifications
• Improvement in selectivity by temperature and bias cycling
• Studies of detection mechanisms and effect of surface modifications on surface gas reactions
In addition to the research related activities the PhD student is expected to contribute to the teaching of courses at undergraduate level, both at courses run by the division and courses given by the department. Furthermore, the PhD student is also expected to take responsibility for her/ his own education in the research field through the active participation in courses (requirements on minimum 60 course credits apply), seminars, and workshops as well as national and international conferences.
Qualifications
Qualified to PhD studentships are only those who are or have been admitted to graduate studies.
The applicant is expected to have successfully graduated from a study programme within the fields of Physics, Technology, or Chemistry at master level. A background in material physics, materials chemistry and/or semiconductor physics will be considered meriting.
Appointment time
The appointment will be until further notice for a maximum of one year at a time. A doctoral student may not be employed during a period exceeding eight years. The total time of appointment must not exceed the equivalent of four years' full time research training.
Starting date
According to agreement with the candidate.
Salary
The salary for PhD students is based on the department's salary scale.
