Position description
We are searching for a PhD student for the research environment Future Energy Center. The work is part of the research activities that will be carried out within a collaborative project where the PhD student will work within innovative approaches for energy efficiency improvements in energy positive and self-balancing districts. This research will be conducted as a part of the national competence center of Resilient energy systems (RESILIENT).

The main focus will be on research, which is conducted in collaboration with a dedicated supervisory team. Within the framework of PhD studies, the doctoral candidate must complete and pass 60 credits in higher education courses. The doctoral student is also expected to participate in the department's duties, which could include, among other things, lectures, supervising students, assisting in laboratories and calculation exercises.

The postgraduate subject is energy and environmental technologies. The position is 4-5 years depending on the proportion of department duties.

Qualifications
Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle courses and study programmes at a higher education may be appointed to doctoral studentships. For futher information see Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100).

A candidate for the position must have:

• MSc degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field, with a focus on energy systems, energy in buildings, machine learning, and/or optimization.
• Experience in developing and applying machine learning algorithms and decision-making methods for energy-related problems, such as building energy performance, energy flexibility, or positive energy districts.
• Experience in programming languages and tools for data analysis and machine learning, such as Python, R, MATLAB or similar.
• Experience in building energy modeling, including the use of software tools such as TRNSYS, EnergyPlus, OpenStudio or similar for simulation of buildings energy performance.
• Good understanding of energy flexibility concepts, including demand response, energy storage, and renewable energy integration.
• Familiarity with resilient energy systems, including the design and operation of microgrids, energy hubs, and multi-energy systems.
• Knowledge in building automation systems, smart grid technologies, and their role in enabling energy flexibility and resilience.

The position requires very good communication and presentation skills, both in written and spoken English. Furthermore, the position requires a good ability to work independently as well as cooperation in an interdisciplinary team.

Merit
Other qualifications considered as merits are:

• Previous experience in use of optimization methods for operation and planning of energy systems.
• Publications in relevant fields, demonstrating the ability to conduct high-quality research and to communicate results effectively.
• Willingness to engage with industral partners and stakeholders and to apply research findings to real-world problems.
• Knowledge in Swedish language, both written and spoken.
