Department of Animal Biosciences. (HBIO)

HBIO is part of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences and is responsible for education, research and postgraduate studies in several basic and applied scientific areas. These areas include anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology, toxicology, breeding and genetics, immunology, bacteriology, virology, parasitology, epizootology, comparative medicine, food safety and One Health. Our research covers everything from livestock, sports and companion animals to laboratory animals and wildlife. Researchers in the department work across the entire range from molecular mechanisms and microbiology to the overall structure, function and behaviour of animals and how these are affected by breeding, physical activity, care, production, stress, environmental factors and disease.

Markers for the detection of anthelmintic resistance - from farms and genes

Content description

We are looking for a motivated person interested in the development of markers for the detection of antimicrobial resistance to deworming drugs (anthelmintics). This will be part of a project funded by Formas. The results obtained will form the basis for measures that actively improve animal health and welfare through sustainable methods of parasite control.

The aim of the PhD project is to develop markers for the detection of anthelmintic resistance. You will investigate fundamental questions about genetic changes in parasites (roundworms) treated with different dewormers on Swedish sheep farms. The work includes laboratory work (metagenomics) and subsequent computer analyses. The PhD student will collaborate with researchers from different disciplines such as molecular genetics, molecular biology, bioinformatics and parasitology.

Qualifications:

To be eligible for admission to the postgraduate programme, the applicant must have completed a degree at advanced level or courses totalling at least 240 university credits, including at least 60 university credits at advanced level, or have equivalent training or qualifications considered relevant at the examination. Relevant Master's degrees (or equivalent) for this PhD position are, for example, in biology, molecular biology, molecular genetics, biomedicine and bioinformatics or equivalent degrees.

The applicant must have a very good command of English and be able to express him/herself well in written and oral English. The work requires flexibility and the ability to make decisions in order to solve theoretical and practical problems independently. Please explain why you are interested in this particular position. Access is desired after the turn of the year.in this particular position.

Meritorious:

Expertise and experience in population genetics, large-scale sequencing (next generation sequencing), genome analysis, bioinformatics, programming, and molecular genetics and molecular biology laboratory work is an asset. Previous documented work with population genetics, GWAS and methods for working with eukaryotic organisms is an advantage.

We are looking for a person who is analytical, thorough and able to carry out independent scientific work and participate in a research group. As the project will involve contact with sheep farmers, the ability to express yourself well in written and spoken Swedish is an advantage, but not a requirement. You appreciate working in a team, both in a national and an international environment.
