Project title
Targeting Formyl Peptide Receptors in Innate Immunity and Inflammation
Job assignments
Phagocytic white blood cells are of prime importance in our innate immune system as well as in inflammatory reactions. The main function of the professional phagocytes is to eat (phagocytose) and kill invading bacteria and to remove damaged tissue-components. In chronic inflammatory diseases some step in the normally self limiting immune process is out of balance and the inflammatory reaction is destructive to body structures. If the process is limited by early prophylactic or therapeutical measures, the negative consequences can be minimized. Knowledge of the molecular and cellular mechanisms that regulate inflammation is important for the design of novel and refined pharmaceuticals with anti-inflammatory/pro-resolving properties.
The project is focused on research aiming to generate novel knowledge regarding the role of a group of G-protein coupled receptors for initiation/establishment and resolution of inflammation. This receptor-biology o riented project will deal with all parts of this particular research area, from identification of new receptor agonists and antagonists/inhibitors to basic characterization of receptor-ligand interactions, signal transduction, regulation of effector functions and receptor desensitization.
The research group (the phagocyte group) in which the project will be carried out, is one of several successful groups at the department of Rheumat. and Inflamm. Research. The fruitful research and research education in the phagocyte group is carried out collaboratively; several senior researchers work together with post-docs and PhD students with different backgrouds (physicians, pharmacists and biomedical scientists) and technicians. Facing the major challenging research problems in the field, there is a need for multidisciplinary research and networking, and the work in the group is focused on a couple of human inflammatory disease models, and with these as the basis for the work we design the projects and project objectives together.
PhD positions are financed mainly through education grants during the first two years and employment as doctoral students during the last two years and pertains to a docotral degree
Eligibility
The qualifications for education on a doctoral level are: degree in advanced level, at least 240 university points, of which 60 are on an advanced level, or in an other way acquired similar knowledge. You also need to fulfill the specific entry requirements which is an English language requirement; Engelska B.
Assessment
After the application deadline has passed, an initial assessment of the candidates eligibility is made at the faculty office and sent to the project supervisor for selection. The process can then take up to 6 months before a candidate is selected.
