Advances in a) sensor/actuation technology and b) human attention models, potentially enables context-aware systems to influence, and be influenced by, human attention. This could lead to: (short term) improved automatic system decision-making; (medium term) less intrusive (ambient, peripheral) information presentation; (long-term) a completely unconscious Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) loop.
The PhD student will investigate technologies (e.g. gaze tracking, providing subliminal stimuli in augmented/virtual reality; projection; haptic actuators) and methods (e.g. illusionist methods; neurolinguistic programming) for spatiotemporally presenting stimuli such that a) the human agent's perception of the current situation is unconsciously altered, leading to b) a change of behaviour in that situation. Experiments will start in controlled simulated VR environments using consciously perceivable stimuli (e.g. visible light flashes close to objects needing attention), gradually moving towards less controlled real-world situations deploying consciously imperceivable stimuli (e.g. presenting visual information below subliminal threshold). Student requirements: excellent skills in software/hardware prototyping, experience in conducting HCI experiments/user studies, and a will to acquire deep understanding of human perception and cognition.
