Do you enjoy building, modifying and installing custom-built equipment?
At the European Spallation Source (ESS), we design and operate unique experimental equipment used by scientists from around the world. We are now looking for a hands on mechanical technician to join our Sample Environment Group as ESS moves towards operations.

You don't need prior experience with scientific or sample environment equipment. What matters most is your practical mechanical skills, your interest in learning new technologies, and that you are motivated to work with complex, custom built systems.

About the role:

As a technician in the Sample Environment Group, you will support the development, testing, installation, operation and maintenance of custom scientific equipment used in experiments with neutrons.

Your work will be interesting and varied, covering everything from equipment assembly and prototyping to installation and operational support on scientific instruments. You will gain experience in working with equipment involving extreme temperatures, pressure, vacuum, fluids, lasers and automated systems. On-the-job training and support by experienced colleagues specialising in these technologies will be provided.

What you will do:

• Assemble, align, calibrate, maintain and repair custom-built equipment.
• Modify and prototype sample holders and other bespoke components.
• Carry out manual machining using lathes, milling machines and similar tools.
• Support installation and testing activities together with engineers and scientists.
• Maintain workshop tools, consumables and a safe working environment.
• Work with other ESS teams such as safety engineers, rigging and facility services

This role includes out of hours on call support during ESS operational periods, expected to begin in 2027.

About you:

This role could be a good fit if you are:

• A mechanical or workshop technician with strong hands on skills.
• A junior engineer who enjoys practical, hands on work.
• A technician from an R&D, laboratory, test or industrial environment.
• An experienced sample environment technician from a similar facility.

You need to have:

• Experience in mechanical assembly, maintenance or repair of equipment.
• Confidence using manual workshop machines (lathes, milling machines).
• The ability to read and work from technical drawings.
• A strong focus on safety in all aspects of your work.
• Working proficiency in English.

You should enjoy transforming ideas into practical solutions, and approach all tasks with a collaborative, service-oriented mind-set. You're eager to learn, adapt quickly, and are interested in contributing across a variety of tasks. A genuine interest in repairing, improving, or building mechanical systems is vital.

Additional experience with welding, brazing, soldering, wiring, sheet metal work or tube bending is an advantage but is not required.

We provide on the job training and mentoring for this role. During your first two years, you will have the opportunity to train at other international research facilities, which may include travel outside Sweden.
