Master's Thesis Scope
What we call integration debt is code that exists anywhere in a project, which is not already integrated into the mainline. If continuous integration was taken to its extreme, every single change would always exists in the stable master branch. But in the real world, there will always be a delay between the mainline and the code in development. We want to be able to measure this distance, both for individual branches and whole projects, to help developers and managers to see where debt is accumulating. This project needs to create and compare different metrics for integration debt, and we envision this leading to a proof-of-concept application, which visualizes this data at different levels of the project. For example could the project debt be visualized as a heat map, which helps managers understand where debt is accumulating. On a single-branch level, it might only be of interest to know the current debt relative to master. However, it would be desirable to be able to pinpoint specific resources, which are in more debt than others (like conflicting changes, or model files which "everyone" seems to be using). We propose this prototype to be a plug-in for Gerrit, to make it accessible to developers. It should also be possible to compare the debt of different projects, to find out who is working more agile. Continuous Integration is both about mindset and tools, and we believe this kind of metric would capture important aspects of both. What is a desired amount of debt? What seems to be working in different scenarios? How can we create an objective metric? We want to figure out the answer to these questions together with you.
