Description:
Master thesis: Simulation of the welding process in order to capture residual stresses.
The purpose of the thesis work is to calculate the residual stress distribution, originating from the welding process, for typical fillet welds by using the FEA software LS-Dyna.
Residual stresses from welding occur as a result of permanent deformation in the welding zone of the component. Tensile weld residual stress decreases the fatigue life and compressive weld residual stress increases the fatigue life. It is thus necessary to have knowledge about distribution and magnitude of weld residual stresses in the welded structures. This investigation mostly relies on finite element simulation considering coupled thermo mechanical analysis. In order to do so, LSDYNA code can be used for welding simulation and thereby evaluate residual stresses. This program is used to solve multi-physics problems including solid mechanics and heat transfer by using the thermal solver in combination with the mechanical solver.
