hela Sverige The research institute Swerim provides applied research within mining engineering, process metallurgy and materials and manufacturing engineering, mainly for the mining, steel and metals industry. Swerim has 190 co-workers in two locations in Sweden - Luleå and Stockholm.
The goal with the thesis work is to enable a fast and accurate chemical analysis of LIBS data for implementation in on-line monitoring of metallurgical processes. The emphasis is on advanced analysis methods including machine learning and classical univariate and multivariate methods. The work will also involve practical lab-work to obtain data.
Background
Swerim is a metals research institute. In the area of materials analysis Swerim holds a high international competence in analytical optical emission spectroscopy and has long-standing experience from developing LIBS systems for industrial applications.
LIBS is a laser-based spectroscopic technique that enables non-contact measurements at demanding conditions where other methods are not applicable. The thesis work will focus on data relevant for metallurgical processes and will also hold relevance for recycling applications. A better chemical analysis enables less use of critical raw materials, less energy consumption, and could turn waste into secondary raw materials.
The thesis work will consist of one or several of the following topics
• Investigation of different approaches to quantitative analysis of spectral data, with focus on machine learning and multivariate methods.
• Performing LIBS experiments at Swerim test facilities, and possibly at industrial sites.
• Implementation of analysis algorithms for online process control.
Performing thesis work at Swerim will give you the experience of working as a researcher in a stimulating environment with modern laboratories, and in a team with skilled researchers developing tomorrow's technologies for industry. You will have the possibility to meet and connect with industrial partners and to understand their needs and interest.
Your profile
We are looking for you who are at the end your Master of Science studies. Strong interest in developing, implementing and evaluating data analysis techniques is an advantage. Current analysis methods are developed in Matlab and LabView. Experience of Matlab is an advantage but the work could also be carried out in other environments. We want you to be able to take own initiatives and to be comfortable with addressing challenging problems.
Practical info
The thesis work will be performed at Swerim in Kista, Stockholm, with a proposed start in early 2020. For the thesis work you will be rewarded with 50 000 SEK.
We look forward to meeting you!
