PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:
The consultant will:
(1) provide technical guidance on the development and implementation of a comprehensive gender policy for LPI ? to incorporate field programmes and head office operations in Uppsala, Sweden;
(2) work with staff at the head office (Uppsala, Sweden) and in the field (DRC, Sudan, Kenya, and Ethiopia) to provide trainings that strengthen capacities on gender issues in peacebuilding and conflict transformation programmes and address how gender can be mainstreamed throughout our work.
BACKGROUND:
The Life & Peace Institute (LPI) is an international and ecumenical center that supports and promotes non-violent approaches to conflict transformation through a combination of research and action that entails the strengthening of existing local capacities and enhancing preconditions for building peace. The head office, located in Uppsala, Sweden, supervises programmes in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia, and a programme with regional partners which is based in Kenya.
GENERAL TASKS:
Review LPI?s programmatic work and current body of tools so as to inform the associated outputs;
Work to review existing relevant policies and tools so as to revise and develop as needed so as to mainstream gender within the organisation and it?s conflict transformation programmes;
Develop and facilitate trainings.
OUTPUTS:
Work with staff at the head office in Uppsala and with field staff to:
Develop concepts and minimum common standards so as to guide LPI in realising its commitments to mainstreaming gender both in the head office and in its peacebuilding/conflict transformation work at the field level;
Devise realistic implementation plans for mainstreaming gender in the head office and in the programme work at the field level;
Review and revise all currently used tools to ensure gender considerations are reflected and further provide recommendations for the development of specific tools as necessary;
Assess training needs within the organisation and provide recommendations for the ongoing development of staff/partner capacity needs and programming goals;
Coordinate and facilitate a two-day training-of-trainers for staff in the field to increase organisational capacity on gender issues;
Coordinate and facilitate a training for staff at the head office to build the capacity for gender mainstreaming among the operations in Uppsala;
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
Masters level in Gender Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies, Social Sciences or related discipline
More than 5 years direct professional experience working on gender in the peacebuilding, humanitarian, and/or development sectors; experience working in gender in peacebuilding will be considered a significant asset
Proven professional experience in the formation of gender policy
Significant programme management experience
Deep understanding of gender and development, gender
