Are you passionate about changes and innovations and want to be part of a paradigm shift in the development of transport and mobility solutions? This is a great opportunity to do that for a PhD on Digital Twin for Durability. This exciting research project will be carried out in close collaboration with the Chalmers University of Technology, Volvo Cars and RISE.
Who are we? What do we work with?
We belong to a department that works to optimize the product platform towards specific customer needs. We are fully integrated in all development phases from research, to advanced engineering, technology and vehicle programs as well as maintenance.
Our team develops, secures, and verifies complete vehicle performance in the areas of durability, ride comfort, handling and vehicle motion by use of complete vehicle simulations. Furthermore, we provide methods and tools for our areas of expertise. We have close co-operation with the engineering and test departments and perform work for all Volvo Group Trucks Technology development sites.
You will be part of a tight team of twelve passionate analysis experts. We work in an enthusiastic atmosphere where joy, team spirit and trust are key characteristics.
Main role and responsibilities
Virtual models that mirror the physical vehicle state and durability health status throughout its lifecycle is an essential enabler to accelerate the ongoing development of clean and energy-efficient technologies and offer new services in the form of predictive maintenance and support circularity through re-use and increase of vehicle uptime.
The digital twin framework offers a way to better coordinate this work and close the knowledge gap faster. By systematically synchronizing virtual models with test data one can detect potential problems with rigs or vehicles at an early stage.
The overarching aim of this PhD project is to formulate a digital twin, a model that is initiated and utilized during the product development process and continues to assess the customer vehicle status and predict future maintenance needs throughout the vehicle life. A methodology for model-based health monitoring for the end-user will be developed. In parallel, work will be carried out to implement the digital twin already in the product development phase. Finally, a demonstrator will be created.
Your major responsibility is to pursue research in line with the project, publish and present scientific articles, support the Volvo Group patent strategy, and take part in discussions for knowledge sharing.
Who are you?
You need to have strong collaboration, networking, and complexity management skills. You also need to be open-minded, self-motivated, and meticulous with independent critical thinking in your problem-solving approach. We also believe you are a person who feels enthusiastic about structural dynamics with a interest in vehicle dynamics with the goal to deliver optimal vehicle performance to our customers. You are a person who gets thrilled to explore the unknown and drive new ideas forward under uncertainty. In addition, we believe you have the following:
• Master's degree in physics, engineering or equivalent with an orientation towards analysis
• Experience from structural analysis and related methods and tools as well as signal processing is required
• Fluent in both written and spoken English.
• Main tools used are Nastran, ANSA, Matlab and Python
