As Industrial PhD Candidate within the department Suspension & Steering Electronics you will be a part of our post-graduate program. The intention is to develop technical specialists, secure competence supply by networking with academies, contribute to Volvo products by close connection between research, advanced engineering and car projects contribute to Volvos reputation as high-tech & research oriented company by facilitating recruitment of highly educated personnel. The target is to develop national and international networks within strategic areas, reinforce a scientific approach within product development, initiate research projects connected to future technology and create carriers of strategic competence. The Suspension & Steering Electronics section is responsible for the development of suspension and steering electronics and control software. The functions are developed using model-in-the-loop (MIL) simulation tools, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test rigs, driving simulators and physical test vehicles.

The aim of the research project is to further utilize the Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) by developing a virtual steering control (VSC) using a steering feel model reference. Your focus will be on how to represent steering feel with a virtual model and how this model can/should be used in the EPAS control. This includes developing an architecture to handle steering feel and autonomous functions, creating a model of steering feel and to derive objective steering performance metrics. You will be able to conduct experiments in a validated simulation environment, steering test rigs, driving simulator and a test vehicle equipped with a steering torque interface and a rapid-prototyping software environment.

The first five years of employment will be dedicated to the research in co-operation with Chalmers University of Technology. The first three years (until the LicEng degree) you will be part of a network of 15 early-stage researchers in an innovative European training network - ITEAM - The Interdisciplinary Training Network in Multi-Actuated Ground Vehicles. The training network will offer extensive possibilities for training, workshops and collaboration within European academy and industry. After your PhD dissertation, you will be prepared take on a strategically important role related to the area of expertise within Research & Development of Volvo Cars.

Required qualifications

• M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering or similar, with emphasis in control systems for multi-body/vehicle dynamics
• Expected background: Applied Dynamics, Control Engineering, Simulation (Matlab/Simulink), Design of Experiment
• Driver's license
• Fluent in English, verbally and in writing
• To qualify for the European Training Network and this position you must not have lived, worked or studied in Sweden for more than 12 months in the last 3 years
• You graduated less than four years ago and do not already have a doctoral degree
• You must have the necessary qualifications to embark on a PhD program
• Meritorious is previous professional engineering experience in the areas of multi body dynamics, vehicle dynamics and automotive control system
