hela Sverige The European Spallation Source (ESS) is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. Our goal is to become the brightest source of neutrons for science and technology and be operational by the end of this decade. A state-of-the-art suite of neutron scattering instruments will be made available to address a wide range of scientific fields in fundamental and materials science. Powered by the world's most advanced linear proton accelerator, ESS will enable cutting-edge research in materials science, energy, health, and the environment for decades to come.
About the role:
As our new FPGA Engineer, you will play a key role in developing and maintaining firmware solutions critical to real-time data acquisition and control systems at the heart of our particle accelerator. Working within our beam diagnostics section, you'll collaborate across a diverse range of disciplines to deliver robust, high-performance firmware that provides our scientists with the "eyes" needed to see how our proton beam is behaving
Day-to-day, you will:
• Develop FPGA-based solutions for high-performance beam instrumentation systems.
• Implement signal and image processing algorithms to achieve optimal system performance and reliability.
• Lead the architectural planning and design for digital systems associated with beam diagnostics.
• Collaborate with other organizational units to define and establish standards for FPGA development and overall digital architecture.
• Verify and validate FPGA implementations against functional and performance requirements.
• Deliver projects within the allocated timelines and budgets while maintaining quality standards.
• Conduct thorough testing and verification of FPGA implementations.
• Provide documentation and training on FPGA implementations, digital architecture guidelines, and verification processes to relevant stakeholders.
• Ensure alignment between FPGA development and the broader goals of the ESS organization.
• Report progress, challenges, and results to the Section Leader.
• Approve specifications for digital architectures and instrumentation systems within the scope of beam diagnostics.
• Make decisions regarding hardware/software optimization strategies for FPGA-based systems.
• Select tools and platforms for FPGA development and verification.
• Define and maintain guidelines for digital architecture standards in collaboration with organizational units across ESS.
This is a full-time, permanent position based at the ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden.
About you:
This is not an entry level role. We're seeking a suitably qualified and experienced FPGA developer with a practical mindset and a collaborative spirit. A bachelor's degree in engineering, electronics, computer science or a related field is a requirement for this position. A higher degree would be an advantage. You should be used to working hands-on with hardware and enjoy solving complex engineering challenges that make a difference. We need someone to bring a proactive, structured approach and take ownership of your work - from design through implementation and long-term support.
You need to have significant, demonstrable FPGA development experience, which includes robust familiarity with Xilinx Vivado, as well as strong skills in firmware development. You're need to be confident working with high-speed data acquisition, MTCA or similar crate standards, and ideally have C/C++ development experience. Experience and knowledge about quality assurance and verification of control systems, preferably using automated test tools is essential.
You are someone who cares about quality, safety, and system performance, and you are familiar with testing frameworks, documentation standards, and lifecycle management tools. Experience in scientific or research infrastructure projects is a strong advantage. We attach great importance to personality and attitude, so we're looking for a real team player: Someone who is sociable, who likes to collaborate with different people and who is committed to helping this amazing project to realise its full potential.
English is the working language of ESS, so you need to be able to communicate clearly in English, both verbally and in writing, so you can develop and maintain high-quality technical documentation.
To apply:
A career at ESS gives you the opportunity to contribute to the future discoveries within neutron science at a stunning, brand-new workplace filled with innovative minds and brilliant people from across the globe. We offer market competitive, individualised compensation which is differentiated according to role, responsibilities, individual skills, abilities and achievements as well as monthly pension contributions on top of your salary.
If you see yourself in what we're looking for, please provide your CV and motivation letter in English by clicking on "apply" and following the instructions. Please be aware that we can only accept direct applications made via the ESS website. Submit your application as soon as you can and quote the job reference number ESD-64694 in your application.
This role requires additional background screening processes and health and safety checks, which will be performed during the recruitment process.
