Causes of noise and vibrations (NVH) in the electrical machines are mainly due to electromagnetically excited sources and mechanical sources. As a part of thesis work in 2022, Volvo CE was managing to develop a numerical simulation approach based on computer-aided engineering (CAE) for analyzing and optimizing NVH behavior of an electric powertrain, especially in the early phase of design. From the numerical analysis, it was observed that torque ripple and transmission error contribute to highest magnitude of NVH response on the gearbox. Now Volvo CE wants to perform experimental NVH evaluation on the physical model of electric powertrain and compare it with CAE simulation results.
Scope of the work
The objective of this thesis is to evaluate the dynamic behavior of an electric powertrain by performing NVH measurements on the physical test model and correlate it with CAE simulation results. This study also includes the systematic examination of the radiated noise behavior on the gearbox housing and the transmissibility characteristics of the electric powertrain mounts
Suitable background
This thesis is suitable for an engineering student in mechanical engineering, product design, machine dynamics or equivalent with an interest in construction equipment, CAD modeling and virtual simulation. The desired start date is Jan 2023.
Requirements
The ideal student(s) will possess good communications skills in English (written and verbal), show a high level of initiative, be self-driven, have good analytical capabilities and have a high interest in computer-aided engineering (CAE) solutions.
The successful candidate should have strong technical skills and should be willing perform measurements.
The candidate should have a bachelor's degree and is now completing his/her Masters.
Any experience within the field of vehicle engineering is an advantage and relevant courses within the subject of NVH is a merit.
Description of thesis work
Initially, study/collect and pre-process the related knowledge on the development of electric powertrain in the driveline & electromobility organization.
Prepare and establish the electric powertrain physical test model for measuring NVH behavior jointly with Volvo CE test engineers.
Perform measurements and evaluate the NVH behavior of an electric powertrain based on the load cases and running conditions that was used in the CAE simulation study earlier.
Furthermore, analyze experimentally the radiated noise behavior of the electric motor and the gear box.
Finally, evaluate the vibration isolation characteristics of the electric powertrain mounts.
Analyze and compare results that are predicted by both CAE simulation and physical measurements
Update the already built simulation models and perform eNVH calculations in ROMAX & MotorCAD if needed.
Recommend a potential solution for having optimized electric powertrain for NVH.
A full report of the work carried out will be prepared and presented to staff at Volvo CE. It will be required for the student to perform the thesis at Volvo CE in Eskilstuna. This work mainly takes place at the division of Driveline & Electromobility systems at the Technical Center in Eskilstuna.
