Projekt G213 143/11
G213 143/11
Interpreting neuropsychological results by measuring practice effects
Application deadline: 2011-02-08
Description of the research project
The project is a sub study of the Gothenburg MCI Study, which is an ongoing clinically based longitudinal study and aims to identify neurodegenerative, vascular and stress related disorders prior to onset of dementia. The aim of the project is to improve the interpretation of neuropsychological test results. Neuropsychology - cognitive testing - is one of the key examinations when patients with subjective cognitive decline are assessed for Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and dementia. Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is considered a transitional stage between normal aging and dementia. Some cognitive decline, however, is associated with normal aging and other ill-health than dementia, which makes the concept of MCI problematic. A progressive decline of cognitive functions is essentially what defines MCI, thus a careful measure of decline over time should reveal the earliest stages of disease.
The project aims to investigate methods of analysis to detect objective impairment, as opposed to subjective. Furthermore, the project aims at revealing false stability of cognitive function, created by high education or cognitive reserve capacity acquired in more demanding work tasks. Specifically, the project aims to investigate practice effects on cognitive tests, both short and long term effects. Short effects in terms of learning curves on a particular test, within the span of minutes. Long effects in terms of benefits from repeated testing, spanning several years. The information from learning effects could be essential in interpreting the neuropsychological results in order to distinguish between benign and malign forms of cognitive decline.
The Gothenburg MCI study is one of the world's largest longitudinal studies, which comprises follow-up cognitive testing over many years. The neuropsychological testing is comprehensive, meticulous and consistent. Thus practice effects can effectively be measured, which could provide important information about the differences between healthy and non-healthy cognitive decline.
