Subject area
The position will be at the Department of Human Geography. Here research is undertaken in human geography and in planning. The research in the Stockholm University Department of Human Geography concentrates on four research profiles: The Stockholm Urban and Regional Research Environment (SURE); Historical Geography and Landscape Studies; Population Geography, Migration and GIS; Urban Africa.

In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.
The language used at the programme is either English or Swedish. Accordingly, the specific entry requirements are excellent knowledge and skills in either the Swedish or the English language, and a minimum of 90 credits in Human Geography, or relevant background. More details can be found at

Selection
Selection among the applicants is made with regard to the candidate's ability to complete the postgraduate programme. The most important reason for the selection is the conditions the applicant has for achieving the goals of the education. Special emphasis is placed on (ranked criteria):
• the scientific ability shown by the applicant in essay work from advanced and basic level, as well as in the preliminary research plan
• Independence in analysis and critical thinking in previous work
• Problem formulation and rigour in previous work and research plan
• Previously demonstrated ability to hold to given time frames
• Methodological and scientific maturity
• Communication and collaboration skills
• Applicant's academic prerequisites in relevant areas of knowledge
• Applicant's ability to contribute to and benefit from the research environment at the Department of Human Geography.

Terms of employment
The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study.
The doctoral student should primarily devote themselves to their own education and the research project, but may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
