Doctoral studentship in Journalism, media and communication

Type of employment: Fixed-term employment, 4 years
Extent: 100 %
Location: Department of Journalism, Media and Communication, Gothenburg
First day of employment: 2017-01-01 or by agreement
Reference number: UR 2016/883

Job assignments
The doctoral studentship is part of the research project -Role of European Mobility and its Impacts in Narratives, Debates, and EU Reforms-, funded by Horizon 2020, the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. The work package within that research project that the doctoral studentship is part of seeks to investigate public perceptions of migration and how these are influenced by specific types of media content and narratives. The research project will build upon panel surveys and survey experiments in seven European countries. It will be carried out in cooperation with the University of Vienna, Austria and the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany.

The aim of the doctoral studentship is for the doctoral student to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to be able to conduct research autonomously within journalism, media and communication, to contribute to the development of knowledge within the discipline through the production of an article-based scholarly thesis, and to contribute to the research project of which the doctoral studentship is part. Another aim is for the doctoral student to develop an ability to later apply the acquired knowledge and skills within post-degree research or other professional work.

The position is limited to 4 years in duration and is carried out on a full-time basis. The position may include departmental duties corresponding to up to 20% of a full-time post over the course of study. If such tasks are required, the duration of the appointment will be extended accordingly.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the position, the applicant must meet both general and specific entry requirements.

An applicant meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle studies if he/she has obtained (Higher Education Ordinance Ch.7, Sec.39):

1.a degree at the second-cycle level,
2.at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 must be at the second-cycle level, or
3.largely equivalent knowledge in other ways in Sweden or abroad.

Applicants who fulfilled the general entry requirements for postgraduate studies prior to 1 July 2007 shall be considered to fulfil the general entry requirements for postgraduate studies also after this date and until the end of 2015.

An applicant meets the specific entry requirements for third-cycle studies if he/she has obtained (Higher Education Ordinance Ch.7, Sec.40):

A master's degree in journalism worth 240 higher education credits (240 ECTS credits), or a master's degree in media and communication studies worth 240 higher education credits (240 ECTS credits), or a master's degree within the humanities/social sciences worth at least 240 higher education credits (240 ECTS credits) if the applicants degree project was clearly and primarily linked to the area of journalism and media studies. An applicant who has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad can also be assessed to meet the specific entry requirements.

The applicant must be proficient in English at a level that will enable him or her to fully benefit from scientific literature and courses at the doctoral level and to actively participate in the doctoral seminars, and to write the dissertation in English.

Applicants who have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad will also be considered to meet the specific entry requirements.

Assessment
According to the Higher Education Ordinance Ch.7, applicants will be assessed based on their estimated ability to benefit from the study programs and on the Department's supervisory resources. To this end, applicants must submit the following documents with their application:

1. papers, degree projects and other relevant works, which will be assessed in terms of ability to formulate, delimit and analyze research tasks and present research results.

2. papers, degree projects and other relevant works, in which the applicant documents his/her education and experiences with respect to survey methodology, panel survey methodology, and/or experimental methodology.

3. The selection process may include interviews.

Admission to third-cycle studies may also be granted within a framework where the University of Gothenburg does not serve as employer (external position, so-called samverkansdoktorand). The assessment process for these applicants is the same as for other applicants. A special agreement will be developed in these cases.

The Head of Department is in charge of all admission decisions at the third-cycle level. Decision cannot be appealed.
