Job description
Linnaeus University, Department of Chemistry and Biomedical Sciences, is searching for applicants for a 4-year full-time Ph.D. position in Chemistry with specialisation in cancer research, within the Computational Chemistry and Biochemistry research Group (CCBG). The employment includes research education up to a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry.
The prospective student will work on a project that aims to better understand, and ultimately control resistance to targeted therapies in blood cancers, and acute myeloid leukaemia in particular. The project involves computational studies and lab experiments with blood cancer cells. Resistance to therapy, developed during treatment, is a common problem with many cancers. Using computational tools, scientists within CCBG have developed a knowledge-based computational model to follow on the development of resistance in cells and the effects of therapy, particularly in chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML). The doctoral student will be involved in expansion of those studies to a condition known as FLT3?-AML, one of the most common leukaemias. The aims of the projects are:
• Expansion of the model to novel CML therapies
• Develop a better treatment protocol for FLT3?-AML based on a computational model, and test the model in relevant cell lines
• Examine the potential of drug combination to achieve a better therapeutic outcome in FLT3?-AML
According to the Higher Education Ordinance a person appointed to a doctoral studentship should primarily devote himself/herself to his/her own studies. An appointee may, however, work to a limited extent with education, research, artistic development, and administration. However, before a doctoral degree has been awarded, duties of this kind may not comprise more than 20% of a full-time post.
Requirements
A person fulfils the general entry requirements if he/she
• Has been awarded a degree on second-cycle level
• Completed the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits, of which 60 credits on second-cycle level, or
• in other way, in Sweden or abroad, has acquired principally equivalent knowledge.
Other assessment grounds
The following are an advantage when applying for the position:
• A minimum of 90 higher education credits in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology or subjects relating to the proposed research subject, or equivalent knowledge acquired in some other manner either in Sweden or abroad.
• Fluency in written and spoken English
• Excellent inter-personal skills and ability to work independently and as member of a multidisciplinary team
• Prior experience in working with cell lines
• Prior experience in molecular biology
• Peer-reviewed scientific publications within the subject area
• Proven programming experience
Evaluation and selection criteria
The selection of candidates is made with regard to the applicant's ability to successfully complete and benefit from their studies at the graduate level.
Employment
Employment as a doctoral student is limited according to the Higher Education Ordinance (HF) chapter 5 § 7. The total employment period may not be longer than the equivalent postgraduate studies full-time for four years.
