Doctoral student in Catalytic Materials for Sustainable Chemical Manufacturing

Do you want to design the next generation of catalytic materials to enable sustainable chemical manufacturing? We welcome applicants who are curious about materials synthesis and catalytic mechanisms, and who have a desire to understand how atomic processes and chemical reactions can be controlled. Join our research team and work closely with diverse academic groups in the search for future catalyst materials.

About us
You will work in the research group of Prof. Per-Anders Carlsson at the Division of Applied Chemistry. Our group adopts a physical inorganic chemistry approach to materials and surface science. Common activities include the synthesis and functional evaluation of catalytic materials, as well as the use of advanced operando characterization techniques to understand their function at the atomic scale. We collaborate with national and international research groups as well as industrial partners, and we regularly visit large-scale international research facilities to conduct specialized experiments.

About the research project
In this project, you will design and synthesize new microporous oxyhydrides and zeotypes for catalytic valorization of carbon dioxide and biomass-derived furans into green commodity chemicals. You will use advanced methods to characterize your materials and to understand catalytic functions and mechanisms.

Oxyhydrides are an emerging class of materials that contain both oxygen and hydrogen anions in the same crystal lattice, giving them unique physicochemical properties that have not yet been explored for heterogeneous catalysis. As a starting point, you will address the challenge of synthesizing microporous, large surface area oxyhydrides for use as catalysts or catalyst supports, and from there expand your research into new directions.

Who we are looking for
Requirements

• Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master's degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science or an equivalent field. For students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a four-year Bachelor's degree is accepted.
• Strong analytical and communication skills
• Fluency in spoken and written English

What you will do

• Pursue your doctoral studies, including developing your own scientific concepts and communicating the results of your research both verbally and in writing
• Teach at the bachelor's and master's level within the programs offered by the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering

Contract terms

• The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.
• The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years.
• A starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025).
• Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn.

What we offer

• As a Doctoral student at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits. Read more about working at Chalmers and our benefits for employees.
• A dynamic and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg.
• Read more about Sweden's generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, healthcare etc at Move To Gothenburg.

Chalmers is dedicated to improving gender balance and actively works with equality projects, such as the GENIE Initiative for gender equality and excellence.
