Research group

The research group focuses on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a rare by fatal neurodegenerative disease. We are a group of researchers from various academic backgrounds, including epidemiology, biostatistics, neurology and experimental science. We collaborate broadly with researchers in the same field both within Sweden and internationally.

The doctoral education project and the duties of the student

This doctoral thesis will focus on the potential impact of altered immune modulation on the risk as well as prognosis of ALS. We will use large scale cohort studies, unique Swedish health registers, as well as a newly launched case-control study to address the research questions. The duties of the student include 1) utilizing large scale cohort studies to analyze the association of chronic inflammation with the risk of ALS, 2) using the unique Swedish health registers to analyze the impact of anti-inflammatory medications on the risk of ALS, and 3) analyzing the impact of various biomarkers of immune modulation on the risk as well as prognosis of ALS. We are therefore looking for a person with sufficient skills and experience in both epidemiology and experimental science.
