Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (CVRM) is one of AstraZeneca 's core therapy areas. We follow the science and turn ideas into life changing medicines for patients suffering from Heart Failure, Diabetes or Chronic Kidney Disease.

We are agnostic to molecular modality and utilizes small molecules, peptides, oligonucleotides, PROTACs etc to modulate disease and change patients lives. This creates a stimulating and collaborative domain for you as medicinal chemist and drug hunter to address scientific questions in an inventive way.

The Medicinal Chemistry Department within CVRM is a critical player in the discovery and design of our drug molecules and in identifying and validating novel biological targets.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

In this role you will provide scientific leadership within the Medicinal Chemistry department and represent the department and AstraZeneca at interdisciplinary meetings internally as well as externally. As an internationally acknowledged medicinal chemist you will build and develop the strategy of medicinal chemistry areas both in the department and in the AstraZeneca global community. You will be a strong influencer across disciplines and in our disease area strategy teams as well as having a profound impact on projects across the CVRM portfolio, in all phases from target selection to drug candidate selection. Key Deliverables are:

* As part of the Medicinal Chemistry Leadership Team provide a clear, compelling scientific strategy in the field of medicinal chemistry
* Initiate and lead medicinal chemistry in projects
* Recommend, gain commitment to, initiate and lead new innovations that help CVRM to meet its overall objectives
* Generate and champion new project ideas and influence how novel biology can be detangled using chemical matters and techniques
* Evaluate and manage external collaborations & in-licensing opportunities
* Demonstrate scientific leadership through high quality publications, conference presentations and by building networks with key opinion leaders and academic groups
* Show strong leadership capabilities in collaborative working, strategic thinking, leading through others and in the development of people and organization

Essential Requirements

You have a Ph. D. degree in a relevant scientific discipline with 10 or more year's post-doctoral research experience in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery, preferentially with industry experience. With your excellent inter-personal, communication and collaboration skills you will have the ability to operate effectively in a multidisciplinary matrix research environment, providing leadership and insight in drug discovery. Experience from leading projects or chemistry programs, including delivery of clinical candidates, is essential. You have experience from, and understanding of, when to use various chemical modalities in drug discovery. It will be an advantage with experience from e.g. various chemical modalities, various hit finding strategies and the cardiovascular and metabolic disease area. Key qualities are:

* A highly self-motivated, scientifically critical individual capable of receiving and analyzing input from multiple disciplines and deciding on focused course of action
* Internationally recognized as evidenced by e.g. publication record
* Openness to novel scientific approaches
* Strong influencing skills in order to build capabilities and implement improvements in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery across disciplines
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to present to senior leaders
