The strategic research area in diabetes EXODIAB www.

exodiab.se opens a position for a bioinformatician at Lund University Diabetes Centre (LUDC) www.ludc.med.lu.se. LUDC is one of the largest diabetes research centers in the world with more than 300 employees, all sharing the mission to prevent, manage and cure diabetes. The centre combines expertise in genetics, epidemiology, statistics, bioinformatics, molecular biology, physiology and clinical diabetes and endocrinology to achieve these goals. LUDC has large unique biobanks and databases with genome-wide data linked to national registries providing information on disease progression and outcome and treatment. The centre has in-house platforms for most molecular genetic methods and metabolomics. Omics-information combined with extensive phenotyping allows a systems medicine approach to dissect the complexity of diabetes. A central theme of the Centre is to develop precision medicine to improve health and quality of life of diabetic patients.

Job description
Applicants are invited to apply for a position as head of the bioinformatic unit at LUDC. The unit consists today of approximately 12 people (including bioinformaticians, a genetic statistician, a data manager, a computer engineer and an IT-data manager), but it is envisioned to expand in the next few years Approximately half of the personnel is embedded in the various research groups and directly managed by the different LUDC PIs; while the other half will be managed for the day to day duties by the applicant. As head bioinformatician, the applicant is expected to coordinate the activities of the bioinformatic unit in order to optimize resources and support researchers at LUDC with bioinformatic expertise. Coordination of activities involve multiple leadership and administrative tasks, which may require the successful applicant to act as the representive of the bioinformartics unit in discussions about projects with LUDC PIs, to allocate tasks within the unit, to organize monthly meetings for the unit for project follow-ups, to facilitate communication and collaboration among the bioinformatic team, to establish common pipelines for data analyses, and to report to the LUDC steering board. The applicant is expected to have excellent communication skills, a willingness to interact with other researchers and to contribute to the common goals of the centre. The Human Tissue Laboratory (HTL) is a key resource for LUDC and EXODIAB researchers. HTL collects human tissue samples for research purposes and performs central analyses on these materials, available to colleagues within the centres at Lund and Uppsala Universities. Today, the analyses include RNA-sequencing, exome sequencing and GWAS. An important part of the work that the candidate will perform for HTL will include quality control (QC), processing, and analysis of these data. We expect applicants to have some experience of, and an interest in, implementing and developing standardized processes for dealing with large datasets, including chip and sequence data. The bioinformatics field is broad and developing at an impressive pace. Thus, the candidate is expected to independently follow the development, work on improving existing pipelines and present alternative solutions on how to best utilize available data and resources.
