This is a tenure track appointment that entails research and teaching duties in the area of Biomaterials Chemistry within the framework of the Centre's profile. The appointee's profile should complement and strengthen the current and projected research and teaching agenda of the Centre.The appointee is required to possess a well-founded potential to develop a sustainable independent research programme and to demonstrate a potential to engage in productive collaborations within the Centre, and with other researchers at the University or other national and international academic organizations, or with industry, or other stakeholders.Teaching activities are to be within the framework of biomaterials chemistry and to include its cognate disciplines, with an emphasis on immunology and related physiological aspects and their application within biomaterials science and technology. Teaching will include responsibility for presentation, on campus and as part of distance activities, of lectures, supervision, seminars, tutorials, group exercises, laboratory exercises, course administration, examination, and the supervision of research project work at bachelor and master degree levels. The capacity to act as the primary supervisor for PhD students, immediately, or soon after, appointment, is important.
The position of associate senior lecturer provides the appointee with the opportunity of being promoted to the position of senior lecturer after application and subsequent assessment of research and pedagogical achievements demonstrating the candidate's capacity for long-term academic achievement in research and teaching. This opportunity is subject to the approval of the head of the department and the dean of the faculty, based upon financial and academic priorities.The position is full-time, though not for more than four years. The position is organizationally located in the Department of Chemistry and Biomedical Sciences.
Eligibility requirements
Eligibility requirements for the position of associate senior lecturer include a doctoral degree or equivalent scientific credentials and demonstrated research experience in an area relevant to Biomaterials Chemistry. In the first instance, applicants should have been awarded a doctoral degree or achieved corresponding credentials no more than seven years before the final date for applications. If there are special reasons for doing so, applicants who were awarded a doctoral degree at an earlier date should also be considered in the first instance. The extent of the skills required for eligibility will be used as a basis for assessment
Other assessment criteria
The assessment will also attach great significance to the ability to independently establish research activities and to obtain funding for research activities. In addition, teaching proficiency at undergraduate and post-graduate levels in areas of relevance to Biomaterials Chemistry and in particular, in emphasized areas, is of significance, as is the ability to establish collaborative projects in research and higher education.
In applications for promotion to senior lecturer, the ability to independently initiate and conduct research of high scientific quality and to obtain funding for research activities will be particularly evaluated. Other important assessment criteria are the frequency of publication in international peer-reviewed journals and the ability to independently establish collaborative research projects. The third significant area is documented proficiency in teaching and supervision at all levels (from BSc to PhD) and the capacity to integrate academic activities with the department's objectives in order to create a good work environment for staff and students.
