Gothenburg and Chalmers are located in the center of the Swedish transport industry, which has an enormous drive towards decarbonization. Our Division of Energy Conversion and Propulsion Systems contributes to this with both applied and ground-breaking research and education. Your expertise, research and education efforts will complete our team effort to cover all aspects of the transition away from fossil fuels.
Information about the division and the research
The Division of Energy Conversion and Propulsion Systems performs research and provides education related to four research directions, namely: Electrification, Internal Combustion Engines, Fuel Cell Systems and Air Quality. All directed towards our strategy to enable sustainable transport without harmful emissions. Your research will be focussed to increase some of the activities related to the system challenges such as balance-of-plants, heat-management, air-management, fuel-management, and efficiency, or on emission formation and analysis (exhaust and non-exhaust). We have currently both governmental and bilateral research activities and are responsible for the fuel-cell-system research in the TechForH2 Competence Center. We work both with simulation and experiments. Within our simulation activities, we use and develop more predictive models for all kinds of systems related to propulsion and driveline, such as system models, chemistry and combustion models, gas-exchange models, EATS models and fuel-spray/gas-jet models. For our experimental work we have a large laboratory for sustainable transport solutions (LaSTS). In this laboratory we have an infrastructure for all kinds of fuels and energy carriers, including hydrogen.
Major responsibilities
We are developing the areas of Fuel Cell Systems, Electrification, Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engines and Air Quality. You will be responsible to lead and initiate research related to system challenges in one or more of these areas (the position can be directed to any of these research fields). You will also be involved in on-going research projects such as fuel-cell-system optimization towards life-time and transient operation, or internal combustion engines operated on hydrogen or other decabonized fuels. All the system projects have electrification in common.
Most of the work we do is focussing on road transport but even other transport segments and research related to our capabilities are part of our portfolio. You will be able to develop yourself and your research area in line with our strategy and to complement our team efforts to cover the propulsion system transition to a decabonized future of the transport sector. In time you are expected to lead and develop a research team based on governmental or bilateral funded projects. It will be your responsibility to initiate these projects and secure the related funds for these. As associate professor, you will also coordinate, develop, examine and lecture in courses related to your research or fundamental engineering.
Contract terms
Full-time permanent faculty position.
Qualifications
To qualify for the position, you need to have a PhD degree in a relevant field. You have a solid education in the area of thermodynamics, fluid-mechanics, electrification and/or mechanical engineering. You should have experience in propulsion system-related research and supervision.
You enjoy working in a team and have experience in managing projects. It is important that you take initiatives to create and execute your own projects but also to help your colleages and students to succeed. You are curious, open-minded and can adapt to new situations and opportunities with energy and positiveness. You have good social skills and embrace employeeship.
We would like you to have documented experience of and a commitment to teaching undergraduate and graduate students. The typical percentage of pedagogical tasks is up to 20% of your total working time. Therefore, we place a great deal of emphasis on your pedagogical portfolio.
Teaching faculty at Chalmers are required to have completed couses in higher education pedagogics in accordance with SUHF's recommendations (REK 2016:1) or equivalent education for a total of at least 10 weeks of full-time study (for information on SUHF recommendations, see the link to instructions for compiling your application below). External applicants who currently do not meet the SUHF requirements may be employed for a permanent position under the condition that the required education is completed within the first two years of employment.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, we would like you to aquire sufficient knowledge to be able to communicate and teach in Swedish within a few years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
