We seek an assistant Professor or Associate Professor to drive the development of future wideband mixers at the Group for Advanced Receiver Development (GARD). You will be joining an acknowledged world-class group both in developing THz heterodyne detectors for mm/radio astronomy and delivering full receiver systems containing these detectors to major international radio telescope projects. GARD is currently developing frontier technology which positions it to be a major future contributor to upgrades to ALMA, EHT, future space missions and SKA; giving you the prospect of leading Swedish instrumentation deliveries to these projects. The position offers an outstanding working environment including close access to Chalmers state-of-the-art Nanofabrication Laboratory, workshop facilities and membership of a broad and creative local academic network of applied quantum physics researchers and astronomers. The position comes with allocated funding for the recruitment of a PhD student with the possibility for additional startup funding from Chalmers support programmes (see 'We offer' below).

Information about the research/the department
The Space, Earth and Environment (SEE) department at Chalmers hosts in total 80 staff members involved in astrophysics research, developing radio/mm astronomy instrumentation/data processing techniques, and in operating the radio telescopes at Onsala Space Observatory. SEE's astronomy related activities are carried out in two of its Divisions; namely the Onsala Space Observatory (OSO) Division hosting Sweden's national infrastructure for radio astronomy and the Astronomy and Plasma Physics Division. The former Division executes research and development on instrumentation for radio and millimetre astronomy centred on the Group for Advanced Receiver Development (GARD). GARD consists of a combined group of academics and research engineers jointly funded by faculty sources, external projects and the Onsala Space Observatory national infrastructure for radio astronomy.

Major responsibilities
You will work with the GARD group in developing the operational detectors as part of the receiver systems for prospective delivery to major international radio telescope projects.

The major responsibilities include:

• Development of THz Mixer chips and circuits

• Characterization of the fabricated mixers

• Applying for research grants

• Publication of scientific articles

• Involvement in teaching activities for courses at master and undergraduate level

• Tasks within academic citizenship.

The extent and actual distribution of the responsibilities will depend on the candidate and especially the level of the position at which the candidate is recruited.

Contract terms
The position is aimed for Assistant professor or Associate professor level. Associate professor at Chalmers is a tenured and permanent faculty position. The appointment as Assistant professor is a four-year, entry-level, faculty position with tenure track, whereby you will acquire both pedagogical and research qualifications. An Assistant professor is expected to improve their ability to formulate and solve scientific problems, to publish scientific articles, and to develop their skills in teaching and supervision, by means of both practical training and independent study. The aim is to achieve the level of Associate professor within four years and, if successful, you will be offered a permanent faculty position at Chalmers. Regardless of level of teh position, as starting package, you will get additional funding for a PhD student for a standard period of 4 years.

The level of the position will be decided based on the qualifications of the selected candidate. For a definition of the academic level and qualifications for the two positions, please consult our Rules of Procedure - Chalmers University of Technology's Appointment Regulations for Teaching and Research Faculty (Assistant professor chapter 6.4 and Associate professor at chapter 6.3). Your qualifications and academic level will be evaluated by the department, Chalmers Faculty Appointment Committee and external evaluators.

Qualifications
You have a PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or Material science and a research experience in developing microwave or THz electronics for low noise applications, documented by publications in the most relevant journals. Also you are very proficient in English (written and oral).

It is highly desired that you have hands-on experience in micro-fabrication and electrical characterization. Meritorious for the position is knowledge, experience or interest in radio astronomy instrumentation as well as a record of working for equality and diversity within the workplace. Previous experience in teaching is also an advantage.

To qualify for an assistant professor position, you have a doctoral degree in a relevant field not older than 7 years prior to the application deadline. The date shown in your doctoral degree certificate is the date we use, as this is the date you have met all requirements for the doctoral degree. Exceptions can be made for longer periods resulting from parental leave, sick leave or military service.
