The Department of Social Anthropology, Stockholm University announces three vacant, salaried PhD studentships.
Qualification requirements
In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle in Social Anthropology, or have equivalent qualifications from Sweden or abroador have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.
For the required special eligibility you must have at least 120 credits in Social Anthropology or equivalent of which at least 120 credits at advanced level. A minimum of 30 credits at advanced level must be from dissertation or project work. In addition to these requirements good knowledge of English is required. Teaching at doctoral level in Social Anthropology is in English. Doctoral candidates must have sufficiently good spoken and written English to be able to meet the demands of teaching and course literature without difficulty.
Only a person who will be or has already been admitted to a third-cycle programme may be appointed to a doctoral studentship. The primary assessment criteria in appointing a doctoral student should be the capacity to benefit from the training.
Selection
The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the training. Applicants who can demonstrate full financing for the duration of the programme can apply at the same time.
The selection criteria are:
• Independent judgement and academic rigour displayed in previous research.
• Ability to formulate research questions.
• Ability to work within a given time frame.
• Methodological and scientific maturity.
• Ability to analyse material critically.
• Ability to organise material with the help of anthropological concepts and methods.
• Ability to conduct an analysis in an original and scientific manner (where originality lies in the analysis rather than the material).
• Ability to carry out ethnographic observations and reflections.
• Ability to cooperate and communicate with others.

Terms of employment
The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study.
Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
