University of Gävle has initiated major research activities in the area of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) which focuses on the global ageing societal issues and how appropriate solutions can be developed to allow elderly persons to stay living independently in their own homes for as long as possible. Personal mobility and manipulation are essential activities taken for granted but which become increasingly difficult due to the ageing process. The area of personal care robots has been emerging recently and physical assistants being seen as having potential for realising effective AAL solutions; consequently, the area is receiving significant attention from the research community and industry. The University has recently started an AAL project called EXO-LEGS which aims to initiate the work in this area at Gävle to develop lower-body mobility assistive robotised "legs" able to help elderly persons perform everyday tasks such as straight walking on flat ground, stable standing, sit-to-stand and stand-to-sit motions, turning, walking upstairs, downstairs and on ramps, etc.
The PhD positions are to support the assistive robotics area generally and create a critical mass team of researchers at the University of Gävle and at KTH able to make significant contributions to this rapidly developing area of technology, both within Sweden and beyond. The planned research will involve the following
• Modelling and simulation to study human biomechanics capabilities, and how these degrade with age in men and in women; in addition, the studies will explore development of concept hybrid human-robot systems and scenarios able to restore functionalities to those possessed by able-bodied persons.
• Involvement with ISO/IEC robot standardization to develop new safety requirements for medical and non-medical robot applications
• Design and development of robotic prototype systems hardware with appropriate interfacing and software to operate the exoskeletons effectively and in full comfort
• Design and perform experimental testing of the systems with volunteers with ethical considerations
• Perform theoretical analysis on the data collected for modelling and control studies
• Preparation of publications, reports and presentations
• Training, teaching and co-supervision of Masters and undergraduate students
• Other duties which may be required as part of the overall research project and for professional development
