Effect of variation in Puccinia striiformis on the epidemiology of yellow rust in Sweden
Yellow rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis, is a major disease in cereal crops, and has caused large yield losses in the past. In Sweden, what is thought to be a new race is causing significant losses in wheat and triticale. One hypothesis is that a new genotype of the rust has arisen either through somatic recombination or via sexual reproduction. The latter is possible since the alternate host for this rust is barberry (the same alternate host as for stem rust). This project, partially financed by SLF, will investigate the population biology and epidemiology of yellow rust. A portion of the work will take place in Denmark at Århus University. Traditional phenotypic studies (race determination) as well as molecular markers will be used to characterize rust collections. This information will be used to address a number of specific questions, such as the relationship between the wheat and the triticale populations, whether sexual reproduction takes place in Sweden, and the temporal and geographic variation of the rust populations. Using this information, appropriate disease control strategies can be developed.
Qualifications
University degree (at least 240 ECTS/masters exam) with a specialisation in biology or the equivalent (such as an agronomexam). Some or all of the following are desireable: Documented knowledge in plant pathology, ability to communicate in Swedish, a driver's license valid in Sweden.

Selection among applicants meeting the requirements is made with reference to written application including curriculum vitae, copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records, one copy of the dissertation for masters or undergraduate degree, a list of at least two references familiar with the applicant's qualifications, certified knowledge of the English language and an interview.
