Improved disease management through including local perspectives and actions- the case of African swine fever in northern Uganda
Applications are welcome for a four-year PhD position in Rural Development, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. The successful applicant will join a dynamic and dedicated research group with a large number of studies of environment and rural development. We work in national and international projects in close cooperation with other social scientists as well as natural scientists.

The department of Urban and Rural Development consists of four divisions: Agrarian History, Environmental Communication, Landscape Architecture and Rural Development. The Division of Rural Development carries out research and teaching related to the ways in which rural areas are linked to regional, national and global processes of change and development. Important research areas are rural policy effects; natural resources and land use; social, political and economic relations; rural-urban interrelationships and migration.

The successful candidate will join a research project funded by The Swedish research council (Vetenskapsroaring;det) entitled: oldquo;Improved disease control by community participation - the case of African swine fever in northern Ugandaordquo;. African swine fever (ASF), is a severe and fatal infectious disease of pigs, with great socio-economic impact on rural communities in Uganda. ASF has been known and studied for almost 100 years, but is still uncontrolled in most areas. Using multidisciplinary participatory methods, the project will investigate reasons for farmersorsquo; responses to the disease, such as social pressures, poverty-related constraints, and lack of health and veterinary infrastructure. The project seeks to enable more effective policies for disease control, including promotion of control interventions that are feasible to implement within the particular local context. The project, which is coordinated by researchers from the National Veterinary Institute, SVA, in Uppsala, comprises several work packages covering the subject from different angles and disciplines. For more information see: http://sva.se/en/research/researches/improved-disease-control-by-community-participation-the-case-of-african-swine-fever-in-northern-uganda-1590 .

The PhD student will perform long term ethnographic field work in one or several villages in Northern Uganda. The focus of the PhD project is particularly on understanding the role of livestock, and pigs in particular, for rural livelihoods in the local setting and identifying key factors of importance for how livestock disease is understood and handled. The PhD student will also, together with other researchers in the project, be involved in methodological development of participatory epidemiology with particular emphasis on how participatory methods can be integrated into veterinary research in ways that account for aspects of heterogeneity and power within local communities, and between local people and researchers, veterinarians and extension agents etc. aiming to research and implement animal health measures. The PhD student will be supervised by a main supervisor from the division of rural development and assistant supervisors from the wider research project group in Uganda and Sweden.

The applicant should have documented knowledge of asking social science questions about agriculture in the Global South through e.g. undergraduate thesis work, other field work experience, or similar. Experience involving animal husbandry is a merit, as is documented experience of using participatory methods and experience of working in rural contexts with high levels of poverty. The PhD candidate is expected to spend considerable time in the field area.

Kvalifikationer: Qualifications needed for becoming a PhD student is a completed masters level degree or at least four years of full time university-level studies out of which at least one year should be at an advanced level. A degree in rural development, development studies, human geography, anthropology, sociology or similar subjects is particularly suitable. Other preferred qualifications: ? Experience in field research in rural areas in the Global South ? Experience in data collection and analysis ? Familiarity with ethnography, qualitative and participatory methods ? Experience and knowledge of agriculture and animal husbandry through employment, education, field work or similar.
