hela Sverige The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Vacuum System Engineer.
Description of directorate/division
The Accelerator Division is responsible for the design, construction, installation, commissioning and operation of the ESS accelerator, in collaboration with partner institutions and with other divisions of the ESS.
The Vacuum Section in the Specialized Technical Services Group is responsible for all technical vacuum systems at ESS facility, working alongside partner institutions and other groups in the Accelerator, Target and Instruments and Neutron Beams Divisions developing the design of these vacuum systems supporting their final activities including cryogenic systems and particle-free requirements for vacuum. The team is also responsible for the specification and procurement of all vacuum instrumentation and hardware and vacuum controls, for installation commissioning and operation of these systems.
Main responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for/or participate in;
• The liaison with partner institutions including the attendance at coordination meetings, witness of testing and other associate activities
• The preparation and development of vacuum system requirements specifications and other related documentation
• The design and integration of the ESS vacuum systems operating from rough to ultra-high vacuum (UHV) regimes, including particle-free requirements,
• The design and integration of procedures for cryogenic system (distribution lines, cryomodules with SRF cavities)
• The design and integration of procedures for particle-free requirements (|ISO 4 and 5 ) for SRF cavities
• The preparation, review and approval of technical documentation in support of the procurement of parts and equipment on the scope of vacuum activities
• The preparation and development of documents for integrated installation, test, commissioning and operation plans for vacuum systems and supporting technical vacuum
• The oversight of manufacturers during the fabrication of vacuum components and equipment; reviewing and approving manufacturing plans and other vendor documentation, monitoring quality and witnessing of acceptance tests at the vendors' premises
• The technical support and oversight during the assembly, installation, testing, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of accelerator, target and instrument vacuum and other related systems
• Identification and implementation of R&D activities needed to support vacuum system operations and upgrades
• The development of budgets, schedules and plans in support of vacuum system operations and developments and implementing of these plans within budgetary and schedule constraints
• The oversight of vacuum technicians and technical associates in all matters related to vacuum system engineering (hardware and controls) and operations
• Compliance with environmental, safety, health and quality program requirements
Qualifications
A BsC degree in mechanical engineering, material science, physics or a related technical field with at least 10-year experience in the design, construction, installation and operation of large vacuum systems, including cryogenics, particle-free and vacuum instrumentation, related controls and data acquisition systems or an equivalent combination of both education and experience. A MsC or PhD degree in vacuum science is an advantage. Prior experience in the managing of technicians and subcontractors responsible for fabricating, installing, commissioning and operating vacuum systems, cryo and particle-free environment are necessary.
The candidate must have excellent written and verbal communications skills in English, be computer literate and proficient using MS Office, CAD software (CATIA), Molflow (Monte Carlo gas dynamics) and COMSOL (Multiphysics including vacuum module) and able to perform vacuum systems analysis and have a working knowledge in heat transfer and stress analysis. Experience of working in an international environment is essential.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
