Hybrid diesel-electric powertrain concept study for heavy vehicle application - Thesis work in hybrid vehicle control

With approx. 3,000 hybrid buses sold, Volvo is world leading in terms of hybrid technology for heavy vehicles. This technology has been developed within the Volvo Group and is used in daily traffic worldwide. Volvo is now taking further steps toward even more energy efficient and cleaner transport, by introducing plug-in technology which will facilitate further reduction of fuel consumption.

The control systems department at Volvo Group Trucks Technology is responsible for the development of Powertrain Control Systems for the Volvo Group products. We are organized within the department of Product Development Gothenburg. Our responsibility is to deliver in-house developed electronic Control Systems for complete powertrains, including combustion engines, hybrid propulsion systems and automatic gearboxes.

Volvo is involved in national and international research projects and offers an international environment for collaborations on the problem formulation and solutions.

Background of thesis project
As the level of electrification in vehicle powertrains increase, we face new challenges. In future products, we need to address increasingly complex interactions spanning over several technical domains, such as:

Energy management, torque distribution and predictive control
Vehicle dynamics and manoeuvrability
System design, also considering modularity and scalability
Sizing and packaging of electrical propulsion system hardware
The thesis work will thus involve several technology areas, as well as organisational units within Volvo. This part is within the Electrical Propulsion Control, who develops control strategies and software development for all electrical propulsion and hybrid projects within the Volvo Group. On the group we are involved in the whole development chain, from writing requirements to SW implementation to calibration and final in-vehicle verification.

Main deliveries
As a way of addressing the previously described challenges, we will initiate a hybrid diesel-electric powertrain concept study for specific heavy vehicle applications. Main deliverables from the study would typically be:

Clarification of requirements
System Design (HW and SW and interfaces and control strategies)
Component sizing
Simulation results with regards to performance, fuel consumption, vehicle dynamics
The results will contribute to an advanced development project, leading to a production project.

Suitable background
Candidates should be in the final year of their Master studies. Suitable Master's programmes include Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, IT, Mechatronics, or Powertrain/vehicle related. Candidates with equivalent background from other programmes will also be considered

Thesis Level: Master

Language: English. As the work environment is international, good skills in English, both oral and written, are required.

Starting date:Spring 2014

Due to the large scope and complexity of the task, we can consider two closely related thesis works, each done by a two-person team.
