Central themes include plant pathology and nutrient cycling in agricultural and forest ecosystems. The department is placed at Uppsala Biocenter at SLU with approx. 300 employees in plant science, microbiology, plant pathology, chemistry, molecular biology, and food science. At campus, active collaborations are established with e.g. the Ecology and Soil science departments.

Subject: The subject includes studies of the role of fungi in forest ecosystems, for example on the interplay between trees and pathogens, endophytes or mutualists. Questions regarding nutrient cycling, biodiversity or population genetics could be included. The subject includes all aspects of fungal ecology, evolution and genomics, as well as fungal community composition and activity. Management of forest ecosystem to optimize the positive and negative effects of fungal activity may be included, as well as consequences of climate change and globalization.

Duties:

Part of this is to identify and study the processes that drive fungal impact on forests, but also the measures that can be taken to counteract effects of pathogens, to improve the nutritional turnover, or conserve biodiversity. This is expected to be done in collaboration with research colleagues both within the department and SLU, nationally and internationally.

In addition, the associate senior lecturer shall:

Priority will be given to candidates who have received a PhD or equivalent qualifications no longer than five years before the application deadline. For an appointment as Associate Senior Lecturer the candidate must be scientifically proficient in forest mycology. Experience from research environments outside of SLU through post doctoral positions, or a PhD degree from another university or research institute, is expected. Good ability to communicate in written and spoken English is required.

Assessment criteria

Emphasis is primarily put on the qualitative indicators of the applicant's academic skills. Furthermore, the assessment includes evaluating the applicant's ability to develop an independent line of research within forest mycology, and to qualify for promotion to senior lecturer during the employment period. This includes to show an independent research profile in forest mycology, to secure external funding in national or international competition, and to apply for or have received docent competence. Emphasis will also be put on skills in communication and ability to work across several of the department's research areas.
