The section Interior trim, is part of the Interior Engineering department. We develop our systems mainly on built to print basis, but also involve suppliers for development tasks. The group develops new system solutions to be implemented in our new car programs as well as yearly updates for current models. We have many interfaces towards groups working with other areas throughout our vehicles. The illumination area is focused in the Volvo Cars corporate strategy. Illumination within the interior was introduced in V40 and we have an extensive offer of ambient lighting and when benchmarking our competitors it is likely that this is an area that will further significantly develop within in the coming years, contributing to the premium car perception.
As a Technical Specialist - Interior Illumination you will have the expertise of how to integrate optical solutions into the interior. It will be an important role when the technical demands and requirements increases and when difficult materials and components are required to be enlighten. Interior illumination is to be engineered in-house and the scope of this role is also to lead Volvo's requirements on and LED specifications and define new technology towards LED manufactures. You will be the person to turn to for the in-house engineers and suppliers when finding technical solutions. The role as a Technical Specialist will strengthen this new and rapidly expanding area within the car industry.
Main responsibilities
• Lead the development of technical competence and methods within interior illumination
• Lead development of mechanical interfaces to fulfill the demands of the lighting requirements in pre-program and when setting the interfaces
• Lead Volvo requirements on LED specification and technology towards LED manufactures
• Guide and support Design and Perceived Quality (PQ) on possible technical solutions to support optical systems in annual work
• Secure lighting strategies over time to maintain Volvo's unique DNA for lighting
• Develop the light quality and methods for verification needed to support the requirements from PQ and design and other attributes including functional requirements, that needs to be balanced in the technical solution
• Create awareness of interior illumination through seminars and courses
• Establish and maintain external expert networks via universities through supervision of doctorate program, thesis work and exhibitions
• Perform customer cliniques to understand the customer's perception and customer's need of illumination
• Support quality assurance and fault tracing activites
• Participate in cross-functional work, when defining superior system levels, commonality work etc
• Participate in design reviews to review and give guidance of technology solutions
• Lead and participate in annual work and advanced engineering
• Deliver education material and carry through education within interior illumination
• Participate in standardization work for interfaces and lamps to achieve the best balance for all attributes influencing the optical solution
Required qualifications
• Master degree in mechanical, electrical engineering or product development
• Deep knowledge and understanding of optical integration in vehicle
• Experience from working with illumination issues and vehicle integration of illumination components (lightguides, LED modules etc) in vehicle programs, minimum of 10 years experience
• Experience in all program phases from pre-program through launch
• Experience in annual work and advanced engineering phases at Volvo
• Comprehensive knowledge about the Volvo unique electrical and architectural platform
• Working knowledge of interfacing subsystems to enable system optimization. Working knowledge of design, analysis, verification, quality, manufacturing and assembly methods for illumination components and its interfering components
• Fluent in English both verbally and in writing
