Cardiovascular Renal and Metabolism (CVRM) is one of the three main therapeutic research areas within AstraZeneca which deliver candidate drugs into clinical development. CVRM Bioscience Metabolism department has a dynamic environment that fosters collaboration and innovation. We are a team of professionals who are passionate about advancing science, to discover and develop novel therapeutics that will benefit patients suffering from diabetes, obesity and/or NASH.
The position is placed within the CVRM Bioscience Metabolism in vitro Team at AstraZeneca's dynamic R&D site in Gothenburg, Sweden.
What you'll do
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Senior Scientist to support our drug projects and make a direct impact on the drug discovery process. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a passion for driving experimental research and innovation to develop state of the art in vitro models for metabolic disease. This role requires experience from working with primary cells using different culture strategies and formats.
Additional accountabilities:
*
Play a leading role in assay development and optimisation of predictive in vitro models for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)
*
Perform preclinical research that will shed light on the biology of the targets, supporting the development of small and large molecule (e.g., peptide, antibodies) and new modality drugs (e.g., siRNA, ASO, PROTAC)
*
Be responsible for delivering project goals by staying hands-on in the laboratory and providing expert advice, interpreting complex data, making high-level recommendations, and serving as a resource for others by sharing your expertise
Essential for the role
*
Ph.D. or Master degree with research experience in an area relevant to Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolic disease
*
Strong scientific background in metabolic disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity and/or NASH related comorbidities and/or complications
*
Significant cell culture experience, including experience with disease relevant cell types, e.g., primary liver cells such as hepatocytes, stellate cells and Kupffer cells or hepatocyte-like cell lines in 3D-cultures
*
Be a "hands-on" expert with in vitro models and methodologies such as qPCR for gene expression, Western blotting and ELISA for protein quantification and with highly developed problem solving and risk management skills
*
Experience in running in vitro biochemical and cellular assays, both manually and using automation, to provide potency and activity read-outs
*
Excellent communication and presentation skills to report data in a clear and concise manner, with a clear understanding of implications within the overall context of drug discovery
*
Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills together with evidence of delivery in a team-oriented environment
Desired for the role

Experience in drug development in pharmaceutical or biotech industries
*
Knowledge and experience with automation and robotic methods
*
Proven ability to lead, motivate and develop junior members of the team.
*
Evidence of authorship in peer-reviewed scientific publications
*
Track record of identifying and adopting scientific and technical advances
