SIPRI is hiring a Senior Researcher and Programme Director to lead the Arms Transfers programme. SIPRI is an independent international institute whose core mission is to undertake research and activities on security, conflict and peace. The Programme Director position
The Arms Transfers Programme oversees the Arms Transfers Database, the most comprehensive publicly available source of information on international arms transfers. The Programme releases annual data updates on international arms transfers and contributes to the SIPRI Yearbook. The Arms Transfers Programme also conducts policy-relevant research.
The purpose of the post of Programme Director is to ensure the long-term sustainability and reliability of the arms transfers database, make sure that it retains its world-leading reputation and is adapted to the evolving means of warfare, to accurately capture global armament trends. The Programme Director will also
• Carry out, write up and disseminate their own research and will both oversee and contribute to the arms transfers chapter of the SIPRI Yearbook;
• Mentor all staff in the Arms Transfers team, and establish and monitor annual objectives for her/his direct reports as part of overall performance management;
• Lead and direct the preparation of well presented, effectively argued and properly budgeted research proposals to secure funding;
• Take part in the collective life of the Institute.
The Programme Director will have a strong knowledge of, and interest in, military technology.
The position is based in Stockholm and will involve occasional travel.
Requirements and experience
When starting in post, the Senior Researcher and Programme Director should have:
• A strong background of research and writing on relevant topics, ideally including both scholarly and policy-focused writing;
• Familiarity with a variety of qualitative and quantitative research methods;
• Experience with communicating results and information to a non-expert audience;
• Experience of managing and leading a team of senior staff;
• An extensive network of contacts in the field of armament;
• Solid work experience: in a research institute or university, the armed forces or ministry of defence (including procurement agencies), arms industry, or specialized military news outlets;
• Fluency in oral and written English;
• A commitment to SIPRI's values and mission.
Contract period
The contract period can initially last up to three years with the possibility of extension. The post requires that the candidate becomes a resident in Stockholm, Sweden, when employment starts. The salary package will be negotiated individually. The start date for the position will be negotiated individually.
