Sandvik Coromant is a market-leading manufacturer of products for metal cutting. With extensive investments in research and development, we create unique innovations and set new productivity standards together with our customers. These include the world's major automotive, aerospace and energy industries. Globally, we employ many brilliant minds and we're proud to create solutions that truly shape the future of manufacturing.
We're now looking for a curious Research and Development Engineer to lead the development of new capabilities and support our existing cemented carbide blank production with R&D know-how. Being based in Västberga, Stockholm you belong to our global Technology team and report to the Grade and Technology manager. You will become part of a welcoming team with a lot of competence - an inspirational environment where everyone supports each other to reach our goals! Since R&D and our production unit for blank production are at different sites, travelling will be a natural part of this position. Are you ready to join us on an exciting transformation journey, where new technology is vital to develop our business? This is a great opportunity to develop and progress in an international environment with a world-leading company!
About the job
In this role, you develop new production processes for our solid carbide blanks production, whilst improving our understanding of customer demands. You assess and explore novel concepts or methods for our existing production, as well as improve the production methods for our advanced, high-performance cemented carbides. You're focusing on developing our understanding on consolidation technologies of powders, including extrusion and powder pressing.
You analyze material properties with respect to microstructure, crystallography, material chemistry and processing route. With feedback from our customers, you're able to draw conclusions on how to continuously improve our products, and to present complex information into actions that ensure development of appropriate solutions. You explore novel concepts, approaches or insights for advanced processing technologies and seek effective routes to their implementation. The work is conducted in an international team, and you act as a liaison with product development, manufacturing, suppliers and customers on technical issues, whilst supporting the subsequent scale-up and industrialization of processes in close collaboration with application engineers and local engineering personnel.
As part of our Grades and Technology team, you have access to a vast source of knowledge and expertise in processing and development of cemented carbide. Your work is conducted in collaboration with our R&D teams, having the capabilities available from one of the most well-equipped laboratories in the business, as well as with our product development nodes.
The location is Västberga in Stockholm, Sweden, and travel is included in the job. At Sandvik Coromant, we encourage work-life balance and offer flexible work hours and hybrid office opportunities.
About you
We're looking for someone with a master's degree in a relevant technical field, a PhD or relevant industrial experience. You have relevant experience in materials science, metallurgy and/or powder processing and characterization, and extrusion knowledge would be appreciated. Whilst experience from cemented carbide material production or development is advantageous, it is not a definitive requirement for this position. Experience in writing reports, and the ability to present the results of activities and tests in line with the target audience, is a necessity. As we operate on a global stage and work within multidisciplinary teams, you must have good command of oral and written English. You're both happy to work independently on tasks or as part of a team. You have a determined approach to everything and a focus on continuous improvement.
We place great value on your personal qualities in this recruitment. You're a positive, innovative, confident and accountable problem-solver, who constantly shares knowledge to reach given targets and ensure the success of our team. Using your analytical mindset and structured working methods, you set ambitious goals, deliver on promises and act on business priorities. You know when to focus on details and when your work requires an understanding of the whole picture, as you easily navigate between the two. In this position, you interact with numerous contacts and stakeholders, both internally and externally, and you place great value on the importance of clear communication and building trustworthy and long-lasting relationships.
Our culture
Innovation is in our DNA and we're proud to shape the future of manufacturing in close collaboration with our customers and partners. We believe in an inclusive, equal and open-minded culture, and we nurture our diversities to form a solid foundation for achieving great results. Add fair and rewarding benefits, as well as many different career opportunities in an inspiring global environment.
