SENIOR LECTURER IN EASTERN CHRISTIAN STUDIES: International Relations and Ecumenism

Subject orientation: Eastern Christian Studies and/or Ecclesiology, International Relations, and Ecumenism

Stockholm School of Theology is one of the leading theological institutions in Sweden. Its overall purpose is to provide education and foster research of the highest quality and to interact with Church and Society. Our most valuable asset is our students who, with their willingness to develop and learn, make Stockholm School of Theology one of Scandinavia's most prominent theological schools. The School has two departments: Religious Studies and Theology and Eastern Christian Studies. The latter department is organised in collaboration with Sankt Ignatios College, which provides an important connection with the Orthodox world.

The Department of Eastern Christian Studies is now looking for a senior lecturer in Eastern Christian Studies. She or he will pursue research and teach within the field of International Relations and Ecumenism, and within one of the fields particular to Eastern Christian Studies - biblical Studies, patristic studies, liturgical studies, or ecclesiological studies.

Subject Orientation: International Relations, and Ecumenism, with a particular focus in one of the assigned areas of Eastern Christian Studies (see above). The area of study has four elements: 1) International and External Relations with an emphasis on how the Orthodox Churches relate to each other and how they express themselves in society and in relation to other Christian communities and other religions; 2) Inter-Orthodox integrity, with an emphasis on how Chalcedonian and non-Chalcedonian churches relate to each other and are working for reconciliation; 3) Ecumenism, with an emphasis on contemporary methods for overcoming Christian divisions; 4) Orthodox responses to contemporary questions raised in the World Council of Churches, etc.

Tasks: The position includes the teaching of courses related to the subject orientation and, in addition, taking on course responsibilities such as examination, supervision and administration. The post involves collaboration with two current professors. First, in collaboration with Professor Cyril Hovorun she or he will pursue research, teach, and supervise students within the area of international relations. Secondly, she or he will work in collaboration with Professor Samuel Rubenson on the development of the discipline of Eastern Christian Studies.

Eligibility requirements: Applicants must have a doctoral degree in a relevant subject area (see Subject Orientation). In addition, she or he must have documented and relevant pedagogical skills and the personal qualities required to adequately fulfill the role. The ability to teach in English is also required.

Assessment grounds: Pedagogical skills and scientific skills are of equal importance for the position.

Scientific skills: When selecting among eligible applicants, importance will be placed on the quality of the applicant's research merits.

Pedagogical Skills: The applicant's pedagogical qualifications will be assessed primarily in qualitative terms. The applicant should also be able to demonstrate a breadth and depth of pedagogical ability. These abilities should be well documented.

Other skills: Administrative and management skills are also important. Such skills should include a capacity for project planning and an ability to cooperate. Since the position also relates to international relations the position requires thorough knowledge of international relations, as well as inter-Church relations.

At the moment the employment is a temporary position, for up to two years, but there is a possibility that it might become a permanent position if sufficient financial means become available.

The position is a full-time position, starting from August 1st 2020, until June 30th, 2022.

Applications should be sent to anne-christine.lindvall@ehs.se by April 30th 2020 at the latest. Questions could be directed to Anne-Christine Lindvall, Academic Dean of Eastern Christian Studies, or the Professor of Ecclesiology, International Relations, and Ecumenism, Professor Cyril Hovorun, cyril.hovorun@ehs.se.
