Are you tempted by a cross-functional role at a company that are following the science and turn ideas into life changing medicines? Do you have expertise in cell biology and enjoy working in the lab? Would you like to apply your expertise on developing microphysiological systems to evaluate drug safety and efficacy? Then you might be the one we are looking for!

AstraZeneca is now recruiting two Senior Cell and Molecular Scientist to join the Microphysiological Systems Centre of Excellence within the Drug Safety and Metabolism organisation. Both positions are placed at AstraZeneca's vibrant R&D site in Gothenburg, Sweden.

You will join the global Drug Safety and Metabolism (DSM) organisation, working within an innovating, scientific environment to support drug discovery and development. The role of DSM is to characterise the non-clinical toxicology, off-target pharmacology, metabolism and pharmacokinetics of molecules. Working with disease area project teams we help to discover safe, efficacious molecules for the treatment of cancer, cardiovascular, renal, metabolic and respiratory diseases. We work with Early Clinical Development and Patient Safety departments to deliver clear risk assessments for progressing compounds into the clinical setting. In addition, this role will work closely with our Discovery Sciences organisation who are skilled in the areas of stem cell biology, genome editing and target identification/validation.

The role

We are seeking graduate and PhD level cell and molecular biologists to join the Microphysiological Systems Centre of Excellence. In this laboratory-based role you will work on novel microphysiological systems (MPS), or 'organs on chips'. These in vitro models are poised to transform drug discovery because they mimic the microenvironment cells are exposed to in vivo thus encouraging them to behave and respond in a physiological manner. This role offers a unique opportunity to develop novel MPS systems for early project evaluation of molecules across the AstraZeneca portfolio and apply them to strengthening target biology understanding. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to develop your expertise across the stem cell and genome editing fields through intensive training with experts. In DSM, we place a strong emphasis on talent development. You will be able to develop your scientific skills by working with leaders in drug discovery, cell biology and predictive science.

These roles will be located in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Essential Requirements

* A Life Sciences degree
* Experience of cell culture of primary cells and ideally stem cells
* Knowledge of drug discovery and development
* Experience of building good working relationships with others, working in teams and in collaborative environments
* Excellent written and communication skills
* Desire to contribute to an open, positive, collaborative working climate, and an enthusiasm to drive personal development
* Appreciation and understanding of techniques and technologies relevant to in vitro systems, including cell culture and cell-based assay systems utilising cell lines and primary cells (examples could include high content screening, -omics technologies, advanced cell systems, gene editing, microphysiological systems)
* Experience of running in vitro experiments
