MAX IV Laboratory, a part of Lund University, has operated successfully for more than 25 years and is currently building the new MAX IV synchrotron facility in Lund.
More than 900 scientists from Sweden and the rest of the world are coming to the MAX IV Laboratory every year to use the x-rays produced by our electron accelerators. They do research in areas such as materials science, structural biology, chemistry, and nanotechnology.
160 people are currently employed at the MAX IV Laboratory. The MAX IV facility, the largest and most ambitious Swedish investment in research infrastructure, will be the brightest source of x-rays worldwide and will replace the existing laboratory, which today consists of the storage rings MAX I, II and III. The new MAX IV facility will become operational in June 2016.
To extend the suite of already funded beam lines, the MAX IV laboratory is planning a world-leading beamline for micro-focus protein crystallography (MicroMAX) that will complement the high throughput crystallography beamline BioMAX, which is being installed.
MicroMAX will be a world leading microfocus beamline dedicated to macromolecular crystallography. This instrument will simultaneously deliver exceptional microfocus (0.7 ?m2 focal spot) and X-ray flux (>1013 photons/second of monochromatic X-rays; approaching to 1015 photons/second polychromatic X-rays). In monochromatic mode, MicroMAX will deliver a 100-fold gain in X-ray flux density over BioMAX; and a 10 000 fold gain using polychromatic mode. MicroMAX will truly be in a class of its own, and will create revolutionary possibilities for rapid collection of X-ray diffraction data from tiny crystals using a serial approach. The mandate of MicroMAX will be to push the structural information that can be extracted from micro crystals of biomolecules to new limits.
Our vision for MicroMAX is to bridge this gap between what is possible with conventional synchrotron based crystallography at storage rings, and what is now becoming possible using serial femtosecond crystallography at an XFEL. The concept is to apply the proven approach of synchrotron-based micro-crystallography with sorting and merging of diffraction data from a very large number of microcrystals, in combination with a variety of sample delivery technologies adapted and developed for application at a synchrotron beamline. This philosophy will push the physical limits of data collection at a storage ring.
MicroMAX has the potential to become a hotbed for innovation at the cutting edge of structural biology, inspiring ambitious scientists to take on the most challenging biological targets.
The MAX IV Scientific Advisory board has ranked MicroMAX as the most highly prioritized new beamline and the MAX IV Laboratory board has based on that recommendation given the management the mandate to initiate the technical design phase.
To this end, the MAX IV laboratory is looking for a scientist with a strong background in synchrotron based protein crystallography techniques and instrumentation to lead the development and construction project of the MicroMAX beam line.
Publiceringsdatum2014-05-19Dina arbetsuppgifterThe successful candidate will have the following major responsibilities:
• Oversee the development, construction and commissioning of the MicroMAX beamline from its conceptual stage to full operation
• Responsibility for the operation of the beamline
• Liaise with Stakeholders & Fundraisers
The position offers the possibility to dedicate part of your time to own research and development projects.
Önskvärda kvalifikationer
The following qualifications are considered as relevant for the position:
• PhD or equivalent in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or another field relevant to the scientific scope of the MicroMAX beamline
• Minimum of 5 years of documented experience of working at synchrotron facilities
• In-depth knowledge in X-ray optics & instruments for hard X-ray synchrotron beamlines, ideally with a strong background in designing and operating advanced sample environments
• Demonstrated experience with protein crystallography, both as regards methods and instrumentation
• Experience from an XFEL environment and instrument development for XFEL experiments
• Experience of designing and operating a data management and data analysis environment
• Professional project management expertise and experience.
The work requires good communication and interpersonal skills. Other qualifications that are important are independence, initiative ability, willingness to learn new skills and the ability to lead and motivate others. Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal are required. Infrequent travel is assumed.
