Department of Wildlife, Fish, and Environmental Studies
We are seeking a motivated researcher exploring how landscape features influence biodiversity conservation in retention forestry.
About the position
The researcher will analyze biodiversity patterns of carabid beetles, spiders, polypores, bryophytes, and lichens using advanced ecological models, including Hierarchical Modelling of Species Communities (HMSCs). Responsibilities include planning and conducting fieldwork, analyzing ecological data, and contributing to scientific publications.

Your profile
Great emphasis is placed on personal qualities such as strong attention to detail, independence, excellent information management skills, and initiative. Experience in leading research projects and successfully securing research funding is considered a merit, as is experience in science communication. The successful candidate should also meet the following requirements:

• Educational Background: A PhD in Ecology, Environmental Science, Forestry, or a closely related field.

• Research Experience: Strong background in biodiversity research, particularly in assessing species turnover, functional traits, or ecosystem responses to habitat degradation.

• Technical Skills: Experience with advanced statistical modeling techniques, particularly Bayesian models, and an interest in learning Hierarchical Modelling of Species Communities (HMSCs).

• Fieldwork Experience: Proven ability to collect and analyze ecological data, especially in boreal or temperate forest ecosystems.

• Publication Record: Demonstrated ability to publish research in peer-reviewed journals, preferably in fields such as biodiversity conservation, forest ecology, or macroecology.

• Analytical Competence: Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in ecological modeling (e.g., R, Python) and working with large ecological datasets.

• Collaboration Skills: Experience working in multidisciplinary teams and collaborating with stakeholders, such as forest managers or conservation organizations.

• Communication Skills: Strong scientific writing and presentation skills, with experience disseminating research to both academic and non-academic audiences.

• Additional Merits: Experience working with trait-based biodiversity assessments, microclimate analysis, or boreal forest species (e.g., lichens, bryophytes, carabid beetles, spiders, or polypores) is highly desirable.

This position offers a unique opportunity to work in a leading research environment and contribute to sustainable forestry practices. The successful candidate will have opportunities for career development, including mentoring and networking within a multidisciplinary research team.
