Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
Location: Institute of Medicine, Gothenburg
Our primary research focus at the Department of Molecular and Clinical Medicine is on metabolism, diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease. We support and promote research and
teaching in translational medicine to improve health and to benefit society.
The research in the group is focused on long-term effects after bariatric surgery as well as genetic and molecular causes of obesity and its sequelae. We lead the Swedish Obese Subjects (SOS) study that was designed to determine the effects of bariatric surgery on obesity-related comorbidities and mortality. In addition, we study the genetics of obesity in the SOS SibPair
cohort which includes families with obesity discordant siblings.
The overall aim of our research is improve treatment of obesity by optimizing the use of bariatric surgery and contribute to the identification of novel targets for drug development.
Job assignments
Within the SOS SibPair study we have identified individuals who are likely to suffer from genetically-induced obesity and their genetic setup has been analysed in detail using whole
genome sequencing. The work includes identification of additional individuals likely to have genetically-induced obesity by analysing 20 years of body weight data in combination with
history of disease in participants from the SOS study. The genetic setup from these additional individuals will also be analyzed using whole genome sequencing.
The work includes interpretation of whole genome sequencing data from individuals with genetically-induced obesity. The employee will be responsible for identifying genetic defects in
signaling pathways involved in feeding and appetite or that in other ways may cause obesity. The employee will also be responsible for judging whether identified signaling pathways involve factors that may be suitable for development of new weight loss therapies. Furthermore, the job includes publication of results from these studies.
Qualifications
High scientific competence (Professor level) within the area of central nervous system regulation of body weight, extensive experience of analysing large and complex data sets including
longitudinal weight loss data and register-based information on obesity-associated disease affecting body weight development, and extensive experience from the pharmaceutical industry
in the field of obesity/metabolism. Since original study data (questionnaires, medical records, and register data) have been collected in Swedish, it is crucial that the employee has very good
knowledge of the Swedish language.
