To avoid dangerous changes in the climate system, the increase in global average temperature needs to be halted at a level well below 2°C compared to pre-industrial levels as agreed in the Paris agreement. Greenhouse gas emissions need to be rapidly reduced to achieve such a climate target. The interlinkages between societal and climate systems need to be understood to achieve a transition to a low-carbon society where carbon emissions are virtually eliminated. In this research specialist position, the candidate will develop and use modeling approaches for improving our understanding about emission and resource use consequences of different mitigation strategies along the whole supply chain of product and services.
Information about the research
The division of Physical Resource Theory carries out research and education on potential solutions to our major environmental challenges, e.g. global warming and sustainable use of land and other resources. We focus on research in the field of technical and socio-economic systems addressing the challenges involved in the transition into a sustainable and low carbon society for a growing population, where a range of different quantitative and qualitative methods can be applied on our research topics. The ambition is to build challenge-driven scientific excellence by crossing traditional boundaries and to increase the level of multi-disciplinarity in research. The division has around 50 staff members, faculty and PhD-students with diverse expertise, including engineers, natural and social scientists. We also offer courses in areas related to our research.
Major responsibilities
The research specialist will develop and use computational modeling tools to analyze emission reduction strategies and resource use consequences for national as well as global climate targets in a supply chain context.
The research requires expertise in modeling both energy and material supply systems as well as the demand response to changes in consumption patterns.
To be able to successfully contribute to develop methods in this field the research specialist need to master the following model approaches:
• Stock-turnover models and associated impacts on material flows
• Prospective lifecycle assessment
• Integrated assessment models (IAMs), especially in relation to supply chains and demand patterns
In addition, the specialist needs to be able to:
• Perform statistical analyses on relevant data in order to improve functional relationships and their parameterization in the above-mentioned model types
• Write programming code in for example R, and have the skill and ambition to learn whatever programming language is neccesary for the task at hand
• Interpret relevant political decisions related to energy and climate policy, including international agreements regarding climate change, in order to analyze results and further develop the above-mentioned methods in a relevant way
Contract terms
Full-time permanent employment.
Qualifications
PhD degree in engineering or natural science and relevant post-doc experience.
Experience in stock-turnover analysis, integrated assessment modeling, analysis of climate policies, greenhouse gas emission statistics, and a general understanding about energy use and transformation in material refinement processes.
Skills in development of relevant computational models and statistical analysis is needed.
Proficiency in English necessary.
Experience and knowledge about relevant policy processes at Swedish, European and global levels.
Experience from contributing to successful funding proposals.
Proficiency in Swedish is meritorious.
Finally, experience of cooperating with governmental agencies and companies is meritorious.
