The successful applicant will lead the design of the antineutron annihilation detector for the HIBEAM project at the European Spallation Source, working with national and international collaborators.
Information about the division/the project
Experimental subatomic physics at Chalmers has a long and successful scientific record, investigating light neutron-rich nuclei, as well as the evolution of nuclear structure at large international accelerator laboratories, such as GSI/FAIR and CERN/ISOLDE. Organizationally we are part of the division of Subatomic, High-Energy and Plasma Physics within the Department of Physics. We strive for providing a stimulating and collaborative research environment with high scientific standards.
Major responsibilities
• Simulate data for the HIBEAM experiment, including the refinement of the existing fast simulation network.
• Studies of the signal and background-sensitive variables.
• Development of data-driven algorithms to estimate backgrounds with, e.g., the ABCD approach used for collider experiments.
• Demonstrating the feasibility of a zero-background experimental setup.
• Comprehensive study of ultra-rare event processes that could mimic expected signals.
• Assessing the possibility of re-using lead-glass components of the RHIC PHENIX detector, including studies of their expected performance.
• Knowledge transfer to the entire collaboration.
• Combining results from prototype tests and improvements in simulations for advances in the design of the detector.Preparation of the HIBEAM detector.
